in the wild, an elephant's memory is key to its survival and while it may be true
that an elephant never forgets, we humans certainly do. So how can we
avoid forgetting what we've learned when it comes to language learning? Why do we
forget things we have already learned? Well our memories are made up of
networks where the information is stored. So why can't you remember a word
expression or structure you have learned? We forget what we have learned when we
haven't formed enough connections in our memory network and when they are not
used enough. So what is the solution? It is really very simple. We have to use
what we have learned. So let's test ourselves to see if we have formed
enough connections in our memory network. In other words, what do you remember? Say
the answers aloud. Look at the first picture. This is of a dog working with
the Army in Afghanistan. Do you remember how to say to be working extremely hard?
That's right. It's to be working like a dog.
Now the next picture. How do you say that it's raining really heavily? We say
it's raining cats and dogs. And the next picture.
What could you call a person or a group that is better than others? You could
call them a top dog.
Let's look at the picture of the cat and dog fighting. What could you say about
people who are always fighting viciously? You could say that they fight like cat
and dog. And the next picture. What is the expression we use to say that something
has deteriorated? We say to go to the dogs. How would you describe someone who
shouts orders in an unfriendly way? We would say they bark orders. Click here to
