This is a Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement lesson in high speed.
The title of the lesson is,
Draw arc in front with hand on the side
By the way, if you’d like to do the lesson right now, or watch the gist, Click the white-circled
“i” icon at the upper right corner.
Otherwise, let’s watch the lesson quickly.
Lie on the right side, please.
Bend both knees and hips at about 90 degrees.
About 90 degrees but within the comfortable angle.
Extend both arms in front on the floor.
Hands are together.
Extend left hand on the floor away from yourself.
And return to the place.
That is back to hands together.
Do this a few times.
Do not bend the elbow.
Feel which joints this movement mostly occur.
Pay attention to the left shoulder.
Pay attention to the wrist.
Pay attention to the hand and fingers and the thumb.
Hold the hand on the floor at the far end of the movement.
Hold the left arm with the other hand.
Somewhere close to the left wrist.
Roll the whole body backward a few times.
This constraint the movement to occur at the shoulder joint and the torso.
This is called the proximal movement of the shoulder.
Take a rest, please.
Extend both arms in front on the floor.
Hands are together.
Once again, extend the hand and the arm on the floor to the front a few times.
Is it easier now?
Hold the hand on the floor at the far end of the movement.
Now, slide the hand upward toward the extension of the head.
And slide the hand down toward knees on the floor.
The hand draws an arc in front of you.
Up to above the head.
Down to knees.
Do this a few time.
Pay attention where does the hand stop going?
What is stopping the hand?
Take a rest, please.
Extend both arms in front on the floor.
Hands are together.
Once again, extend the left hand and the arm on the floor to the front a few times.
Is it easier now?
Extend both arms in front on the floor.
Hands are together.
Now slide both hands, together, up and down.
Now, the right arm is moving with the left arm.
In this configuration, the torso is mostly fixed and the arms are moving relative to
the torso.
This is called the distal movement of shoulder joints.
Do it many times, soon or later you will find the right arm is helping the left arm in other
situation.
Next time when the hands are above you, stay there.
Now, with hands and arms there, look down and up many times.
Only the head and eyes move.
Arms and hands stay above you on the floor and do not move at all.
now, we are differentiating the head and the arm.
Maybe the torso, too.
Take a rest, please.
Once again, draw arc in front of you with both hands and arms.
Next time when the hands are near knees, stay there.
Now with hands and arms there, look up and down many times.
Only the head and eyes move.
Gently, do it.
now, we are differentiating the head and the arm in the different situation.
Take a rest, please.
Extend both arms in front on the floor.
Hands are together.
Once again, extend the left hand and the arm on the floor to the front a few times.
Is it easier now?
Slide both hands together up and down.
This time, keep on looking at the hand with head and eyes.
Does the hand go up even further?
Your spine bends backward to help the movement upward.
Do it many times to feel the spine bends backward easily and gently.
Take a rest, please.
Extend both arms in front on the floor.
Hands are together.
Slide the left hand and arm up and down on the floor.
Only the left hand and the arm, now.
Keep on looking at the hand with head and eyes.
Your spine bends backward to help the movement upward.
But the spine does not bend exactly backward.
The right side of the ribs bends backward.
But not as much as the left side.
Do it many times to feel how the spine bends backward.
Take a rest, please.
Extend both arms in front on the floor.
Hands are together.
Slide the right hand and arm up and down on the floor.
Only the right hand and the arm, now.
The left hand stays on the floor, quiet.
Keep on looking at the hand with head and eyes.
Your spine bends backward to help the movement upward.
But the spine does not bend exactly backward.
The left side of the ribs bends backward.
But not as much as the right side.
Do it many times to feel how the spine bends backward.
Take a rest, please.
Extend both arms in front on the floor.
Hands are together.
For the last time, extend the left hand and the arm on the floor to the front a few times.
Is it easier now?
Slowly stand up
Look up and down a few times.
Up and left.
Up and right.
Down and left.
Down and right.
Feel the spine.
Walk a bit.
Feel the difference between left and right.
This ends the lesson.
Thank you.
