I think that planning your finances when you get to uni is the most important thing
you can do. I spent the first year in my course always broke. And I mean really, really broke.
I would often come to the end of the week and after paying for the basics like, rent, getting
to uni and of course, you know, going out, I wouldn't even have enough money for a food shop.
It was only when I started doing a budget and sticking to it that I got ahead. I had $300
a week to spend, so I divided the money up into four main areas -- food, rent, uni expenses
and having fun. I allocated $90 a week for food, $120 for rent, $30 for uni and $40 for entertainment.
Every now and again an emergency pops up, like a new pair of shoes that you've just got to
have, or more seriously a medical bill. So I allow $20 each week for those things in life.
There will be other costs that can really
hurt your pocket if you're not prepared for those things that just pop up out of the blue.
So, do your budget and stick to it, and know what you can afford to spend.
