Do you believe in God?
Why or why not?
What would your reaction be if we ask you whether or not you believe in God?
We’ll have two groups here debating for and against the topic!
The existence of God has been up for debate ever since the idea originated but the 21st
century has seen a new level of questioning.
Wait, we aren’t complaining- after all, we live off such spicy and heated discussions!
Jokes apart, the concept of religion and God is personal to every individual and while
they may be very different, none of them is wrong or right.
See how diplomatic we are but the point here is not about our views but about the reasoning
each group presents for their side of the belief.
So shall we begin this journey of contrasting facts, belief systems and reasoning?
Alert: proceed with caution, this might be against your opinions!
Number 1.
The existence of life Did you know that there are around 11 million
species on planet earth?
Wow, such variety- impressive.
But how did they all begin to exist?
Yes, of course it was by chance that life happened to our good old earth!
Scientists claim that given the right conditions, some sort of life form would eventually evolve.
But isn’t it like saying that if a tornado blew through a junkyard containing all the
parts of a 747, accidentally assemble them into a plane, and leave it ready for takeoff?
There are chances but so negligible that you wouldn’t bother giving them a second look!
And guess what, it was a respected astronomer Sir Fred Hoyle who asked this question.
So you can say that even science isn’t sure as to how life happened but it surely wasn’t
by sheer chance!
Number 2.
God of gaps How do you know that God exists?
What’s in the universe that cannot be explained by science?
Okay, we know that there are certain things that science has not been able to explain
as yet but can that constitute as God’s miracles or wishes?
Let’s take you back in the age when Greeks believed Poseidon to be behind earthquakes
and people all over the world thought the mighty God to be behind every natural phenomenon
ranging from tsunamis to lightening.
It is no secret that science has been blamed for all these activities.
This means that the miracles God was doing are somewhat reduced, right?
Or maybe everything that we associate with God and his miracles are just scientific phenomenon
we don’t know about!
Come on, how long can you go on with this flawed concept of terming every unknown activity
as God’s wish?
Number 3.
The start of universe What do you know about the start of the universe?
We’ve all heard about the Big *** that happened some 13.8 billion years ago, an explosion
of energy and light which when cooled off gave rise to everything from atoms to stars
and galaxies that we know today!
Everything in place, all the pieces of the puzzle fit perfectly but you missed a very
important detail.
What caused this explosion?
We can agree that the first seed of everything was planted in that instant of the explosion
and thus the universe was created as we know it today but we still can’t figure out what
caused all this!
Come on, the universe had not always existed, it had a start but we are still vague about
how it all began.
Seems like there are certain things that science can’t explain so shan’t we be seeking
God for the answer to this one?
Number 4.
Perfection in God’s messages There are so many scriptures depicting the
teachings of various religions that if you attempt to read them all without a stop, at
the end you would emerge out of piles of dust and trees growing over you!
That was obviously a stretch but the point is, it is next to impossible to read them
all.
But even if you do read them, there is little to no chance that you will understand the
gist of the messages God has written for his children.
Confused?
Well, if you ever make up your mind to sit through a session of reading at least one
of them, you’ll realize that the messages are not straightforward.
They are shrouded in poetry, metaphors and ambiguous phrases with connection to a primitive
culture from a few thousand years ago!
You may feel that you have decoded the messages but just for your knowledge, they can be interpreted
in 1000 other ways, leaving you baffled!
So the perfect God has left you with not-so-perfect messages, nice!
Number 5.
The universe follows rules Life may be unpredictable in general but there
are hell lot of things that we know won’t change!
Confused?
We are talking about things like the consistency of gravity, earth’s rotation, the speed
of light and effect of temperature on a hot cup of coffee!
Isn’t it weird that we can identify laws of nature that never seem to change?
This leaves us wondering what makes the earth follow these rules and trust us, we couldn’t
lay our finger on a believable explanation!
The thing is that there is no logical necessity for a universe that obeys rules.
The universe doesn’t have to work this way, you know that fits well with the laws of mathematics.
It is easier to imagine a universe that does its own thing, where conditions change unpredictably
with every minute and even things pop in and out of existence.
It is indeed a miracle that universe follows rules and since we aren’t directing it to
do it, who is?
Number 6.
Flawed God Since nobody has met God, at least not the
ones alive today how do you know what God is like?
That information has been passed on to us by our ancestors and they read it from the
scriptures probably so we have believed every bit of it.
So the idea of God that we have been swearing by says that the Almighty is Omnipotent.
If he was so powerful and he loves us like his children, why does he let innocent people
be killed?
So many incidents of mass killing have made way in history books but when God has always
existed and exists as a power source, it is weird that he lets his children suffer!
And who said that God is Omnipresent?
If he is present everywhere, then why he needs messengers to get information is beyond our
capacity to fathom.
Wait, God is Omnibenevolent also which means he loves us unconditionally but burning people
in hell makes sense to him!
The last nail in the coffin is that God is said to be Omniscient but somehow he turns
a deaf ear to the cries of his children.
Now if he does it purposely then worshipping such a God is a weird choice but if he cannot
hear you, your idea about him is flawed.
So who is wrong here, the believer or the master?
Do you believe in God or don’t you- what is your idea about the Almighty?
