alternative ways to use a ring flash Adorama TV presents
take and make great photography with Gavin Hoey
for you learn how to take stunning photos and then polished and in

I'm Gavin Hoey and watching Adorama TV brought to you by Adorama the camera

aspetto prefers and today I'm joining this to you by iffy
he's a grime artist of some repute here in the UK
and we're gonna take some pictures of him using the Orbis ring flash
now ring flash is a gray and most people use ring flash is exactly why I'm doing
here just grabbing a flash in
shooting straight through the middle I gave a wonderful result
you get a very distinctive flack almost had a slight
that so popular with passion photography but these things can be much more than
just that they're not a one-trick pony
they can be used in also two different ways to create amazing portrays
and what happened three different ways right now
so for of a set up we're gonna do something a little different we're not
gonna shoot
through the whole of their the ring flash would you can use the ring flash
as if it was a small softbox so to trigger this off-camera I'm gonna use
the pop-up flash on my Canon 60d
that says master and the Canon 580 EX not to flash
is set as the slave so we can do off-camera flash we need to do is just
satellite up okay be ready okay so i cant we hooked up
we offer a column mean dark look with this one
so I will guess get the ally tango de vere and we're gonna fly at high but
only just that a shot so it's gonna come up ran out there
try not to hit you with the light thanks pretty kid
okay thank at were on full power with the flash
I'm on f8 ISO 100 with the camera to take a test shot and see how that goes
so much Asia Pac and it's pretty good I reckon got it pretty much *** on the
Evo
it a little bit too much of the on is in the picture and I want this actually
have the eyes disappear I want have a really
mean feeling by taking the either way thats I P what will get site important
could refile forward
at better at perfect
I'm gonna get a shot just like that
wonderful now because we got no light hitting the eyes and that's kinda
the idea I do have to watch the position the light to me that Justin
inch or two forward and the position is critical just a tiny little bit
and it makes all the difference to the shot
okay so that's a really good shot just simply using the the Orbis
as an off-camera softbox as many things around again and do something different
so for the second set up we're gonna do something very similar
we still gonna keep the flash off-camera and we're gonna keep it really close to
if the so we get some beautiful soft lighting
now remember when it comes to soft lighting the size at the light source
relative to the subject is what makes the lighting soft

some great tips and advice now you don't have to stick with just the Orbis ring
flash
you can make splashes together so as well as the ring flash I've got two more
clashes in the background
and they're gonna be facing the camera so what should happen this is the idea
they should go fire flash we're gonna be touring lighting
around iffy and you get some great flair
but then if he's gonna be lit by the their remain flat itself
to put some great light in the face that's the idea now to get if they were
really well
if he's actually do some vocal peace to the flash
okay so he's actually looking up at a light to get some light in the face
okay let's take some pictures okay anything it's just thought what a shock
for me said he gonna take a little step that why
we can we do it a shot before we get going okay so
a quick 10 shocked important because if you don't get a shot you don't know what
you gonna get
and i'm looking at this i'm saying that looks a little bit dark
I could go around and change all the lights but looking at my camera hey I'm
on
f8 if I open up the aperture a little bit say let's go to F
4 that gonna give me more light from all other flashes
and hopefully make this a bit brighter one more test show pretty and perfect
exactly what I'm after
okay so my lighter set if you ready yeah yeah okay
way here %uh some phones I E abuse my confidence money

but we can get some great reflections at this thing so we got a free here wearing
very stylish pair Ray Bans looking super smart and we're gonna use the the
sunglasses
to reflect the shape all the Orbis ring flash back to the camera
okay let's take a few pitches and see how these guys okay so you want to write
back against the wall

Sep okay so what I'm doing and i'm looking in the reflection in the glass
is not try to see my
my ring flash when I say etna take a shot and that's gonna put the the flash
straight back as a reflection I'm gonna get a great deal shot that way
science committee replace whatever really wide angle shot

but on something like iffy Ryan artist extraordinaire
I I worked pretty well it
okay so what I've done is I've taken my it my all BS and
I printed off a little circle and with a bit if they're cutting in and sticking
I just made this little star patented around the outside
now the reflection when I get back from this is gonna be well different to the
normal ring
as you will okay here we go

and it reflects back with a circle of stars absolutely brilliant
okay so for the very last show I just switch lenses I've switched to a
fish-eye lens
which known as we don't recommend report rates but in this case if he's kind of a
stylish guy and this is going to be a real style I shot
has given well you guys say when you come in here
and the fish I became I don't get my own I'm
flash in the shop but we get some great shots
with the your best flicking back stars in his eyes quite literally
and that really does look really smart I love
seemed okay so there we go
there are three different things you can do with an everyday ring flash that is
in traditional ring flash photography
or experimenting about trying different ideas and seeing what works and
what doesn't now we need to do is get why these pages
into Photoshop and what isn't anything on it right now
it's always great when he come out on a shoot with lots of pictures in fact too
many to choose from for editing purposes but
the 1 I'm gonna do is one from the early part of the shoe where we use the
your with ring flash simply isn't off-camera small soft box
so this is the raw file where he resided Photoshop CC although this would be
exactly the same
if you're in Lightroom develop module now really the first thing I'm gonna do
is why I what I had in my head
and that was to take the clarity slider really push this hard
and normally with clarity we'll get the other way we can soften things out but
this season that kinda portrayed this is a hard gritty
very low Nikki moody shot and this will take
lots and lots clarity making I'm gonna do it just have a look at the blacks
in this picture because it really is low-key I'm gonna turn on the clipping
warning for the blacks
and I can see there are a few but not as many as I would like
so let's get the black slider modest polish down into basically everything
goes black
okay we can turn off the mornings now that's fine so now I now got some really
nice
deep blacks in their that will give this picture really that low key feel those
AV oppressive blacks whites yet we can provide a with a little bit more whites
in here as well gee I asked to give
and that will brightness but you look at the histogram and if you didn't see the
pitching you think this is a very
underexposed paycheck that's why histogram should only ever be used as a
guide
rather than the rule because it's a and absolutely fine
come as well much gonna bring the vibrance down on this pitcher Justin
mutes the Collins down a little bit something like that
but I will push the saturation up a tiny bit just so we don't lose
one color in there and I give me again at nice kind of
color scheme okay now that everything I want to do here
as far as the global changes guy is in finish up role
and Leitrim are able to the back label changes and local changes
and by local changes I mean using a paintbrush and the brush
here in Photoshop rule is this one the adjustment brush
so with the just brush I can change all sorts of things but the thing i really
wanna change
my man is probably just the highlights so on Photoshop I can just simply click
the minus sign
everything else gets reset and I can just bring the highlights down
because these are the brightest part so the picture I don't want them to be
Senate discover those out maybe not quite as dark as that I want the the
mouth area in the face to be the brightest part
so that's making pretty good now obviously we have the issue with the the
hoodie
and actually this is my hoodie know if these II loneliness for the purposes of
photography site
there's any style issues is not because he's in stylish is because the bar at my
jacket
but the hoodies in a way to try and make sense that is being big lift for bob is
net so that's where the bright parts gonna be
and we just needed time that and just a little bit
so here with the adjustment brush I'll add a new pain and this time I'm just
gonna set the exposure
again minus two stops got a nice big brash
and we just lose the pain I over the top of his head like that
okay that's pretty good now they do it again say let's make another new brash
and most are and different place to get the pin in a different place
with paint in the eighties just to soften that down
okay now that feels much more menacing now that's good
last thing is the eye is now I deliberately let the eyes go dark that
was part and parcel of the show and the look
they're not completely dark I have a have a close look when you have a close
look you'll be able to say that things aren't
totally dark in the eyes which is the main and here
and there aren't gas the merest hint there depending on how you got money to
set up
you may just be a to see them just to bring out just a tiny little bit I'm
gonna get the shadows will make another new brush
and will make the shadows just a little bit brighter jester
bring a tiny little bit detail out from that part of the picture
okay so cast little bit brighter on the shadows
so there is the in devise maybe it's a little bit more clarity on there as well
just say
they come through now trouble is if you go to do something like that again even
closer
you will see there is quite a bit in no way starting to here
and I am I not on no noise reduction at two so far
when I would do here it is funny noise reduction for that pain and it's just
make sure we're working on the right
in we r I say I'm gonna take the noise reduction all the way up to maximum
and will bring them or a reduction up as well that helps to remove this
stripey lines that you can sometimes get
so there we go Pats a great pitcher and a great result and using the or between
clashes really given us some creative
