Hugo: uh, yeah!
oh f*ck wow
Umu: Okay, so BTOB is a seven member boy group that debuted in
2012~
This very first song that we're about to react to "I'll be your man" is actually their first comeback after they had released a
100% ballad trilogy where they really focused on like showcasing their vocals
So this one they're like, yeah, the rapper's can shine again
This song is composed by the BTOB member
Hyunsik and the songwriters Eden and Nathan "I'll be your man" is about not being able to forget a past love and praying to be with
Her again. However, the music video may have a plot twist~
James: May? Umu: it may James: it... (Hugo: It's gaaaaaaaay) won't?
okay
Hugo: un, deux, trois
Isaac: Oh shoot
ISaac: ohhh we got a sniper on the roof-- K: jeez
KEvin: No scope, oh no, here it comes, here it comes. Oh Isaac: English.
Kevin: Yeah, hella half diminished action, come on
Peyton: This sounds like some tough-guy soft music
Peyton: Just like-- yeah Charlotte: nice little violin solo
oh
Peyton: oh yeah
Lindsey: that was weird the intro like ended on a leading tone but then it didn't keep going in that key
Isaac: aww Kevin: love that, that little guitar thing that's like at--- the sort of the background. Come on
Peyton: He's definitely like the emotion of the group
Charlotte: This is sexy, (PEyton: yeah, it's like) the music is sexy. This is like something you would put on like your getting it on playlist
Olivia: *** about to go down.
you have to have something to drive you to the chorus
Might as well have it be the beat if you're not going to have it be the harmony Aaron: oo that sexy jacket
Peyton: See there's a nice balance of like tough guys and like guys who are in-touch with their feelings
Hugo: awww y eah
Oh, f*ck wow holy sh*t
Aaron: I like how the bassline descends Olivia: He just like flew up there
Lindsey: I like this guy's voice it's like very strong
and the harmonies
Kevin: It's gonna go 5, yeah ahh!
WAS THAT A 6?!?!??!
Was that deceptive!??!
Hugo: oh *** James: woah the octave
well I mean it's just the deep voice
Lindsey: that was a nice contrast. the little rap section
Fiona: i want like this song to be like all of that, i love that
Olivia: every time you hear that, they're setting up for the chorus
Aaron: This is a pre-chorus Olivia: pre-chorus
Kevin: Good rapping.
yeah!!! yeah!
no triplets. No triplets, just straight duple
Lindsey: he's like- leading into the chorus, the guitar goes like [makes sound]
Kevin: I love that, that octave leap, it's so good, all of them- Isaac: oh confession time
Peyton: Very conventional harmonies like and like but like not in a boring way
James: wait now--- I'm just realizing the church theme! what the heck
Kevin: Nice it's cliche, but it's effective
Fiona: Piano equals sentiment in this. Lindsey: Yeah, I definitely agree
James: Wait, so it's a war zone. There's a church
James: Now we're in purgatory, I don't know
Peyton: yeah and now they're slowly bringing it back Charlotte: oh what the heck!!!
Charlotte: this video though.. Pwyton: wow this has taken a left turn
Charlotte: oh she Peyton: OH So--- C: --- whattttt P: HEY
Lindsey: Is she having him killed?
oh he really is gonna be her man, but not in that sense
James dying: whhhaat
James: *big inhale* What!?!?!
Lindsey: This is interesting
Wait I like how they have like the rap going with the singing like they're like combining everything at the end
KEvin: like anything the instrumentals lack,
the vocals totally deliver it, including the rapping
Hugo: damn. Im all about- James: this is so good
Hugo: oh sh*t James: OMG
Hugo: I'm all about that song. I don't know what we thought of them before, but that *** was tight
JAmes: Such good music such a good video.
oh my god Umu: yeah
So what aspects of the music and music video together did you think was your favorite Hugo: they totally played with our anticipation of what they were
Gonna do musically, there was enough rhythmic variety that it really was interesting and a blast, but it wasn't so much that it was
Eclectic. you weren't like having trouble following the music
It was so good
Like in the beginning, it builds up like it was about to be a drop and then it got really quiet
And you had like James said you had the drum on two and four James: there was---
There was a variation on everything which is what I love
variation of timbre variation of rhythm good equal balance both on the highest
Say for the the the vocalist part that one high note was phenomenal Hugo: oh my god
I want to go back and find the kind of god f*cking d*mn that sh*t was
wOO
James: good mixing too
Hugo: Like what
Hugo: He just goes up. He's just like
Oh God Olivia: I like the range yeah
Olivia: like his little leaps Aaron: his little little like [demonstrates]
to the stratosphere! Aaron: It was like very emotional--- i was like preach Olivia: yeah it was like it had to do with like you know
Oh when we talk about like text painting where like the lyrics reflect
are reflected in the music
and like, when every time there was like a really dramatic moment
He just like his voice shot up like 10 million octaves Aaron: 10 million octaves! O: you know i'm being- A: 10 million-
Olivia: its a hyperbole
Fiona: It got pretty layered
and intense whenever like it built to when he was kind of hanging upside down
F: and gna die Lindsey: I think it was kind of Awesome. There were like a bunch of different sections throughout the beginning
I mean there was like the chorus and then there was like
Different types of verse I guess and then when it got towards the end and the plot was thickening and it got more
Like "what the ***?" uh
Sorry. *"what the mmm?"
Then they like took everything and put it on top of each other, but it all worked together
Isaac: They introduced a lamenting qua-- a
lamenting bass and then sometimes when when they want to bring it up to
Climax instead of going like they would start going down but then start climbing up and it would hit like an "E" a
High E and- *kevin interrupting*: yeah, deceptive
isaac: oh okay, you're gonna go to high F but instead they dropped to the low F and it goes into a whole like either their chorus or
another verse. I don't know. It was very straightforward
like when it got faster the beats got faster and
Then when it dropped out of tempo it usu- usually-- is replaced with slow and soft piano line
Yeah Umu: okay, and then you shouted something while-- Kevin: oh deceptive
Umu: Yeah
So what's what's up with Kevin: so right after the first chorus it goes in it's a all the instruments hush
and there was a big intense 5 the
[sings] right? the voice goes up to 1, but then the bass goes up to 6 and
But but it's so subtle because the instrumentals all die and you're just like
[whispers] you're like...woah it's not over
Whoa, I want to keep on listening
Umu: ready to move on? Both: Yeah Umu: okay. So next one is also a BTOB release. This is their
2017 comeback called movie it was composed by the member named Ilhoon and the songwriter IL
Movie is about how they want to have a relationship with a girl like a movie even though it might be cliche
They still want to live their life like it. This has plenty of movie references
I'm guessing you don't want me to spoil any of them. kevin: Of course not Isaac: definitely no
umu: Okay. then go ahead
KEvin: Feel em Lindsey: feel em
It's like me but backwards
ooh
Olivia: oooooo, Jazzy, chromatic
Kevin: nice those are some good chords, those are i dont even know what's happening it's too R&b for me
the soft piano kevin: major 7, minor 3
Lindsey: the synth did a weird thing and there was like--- rEWrW Fiona: sounded like a cat that got stepped on its tail L: it really did
hugo: Oh that bass oh
James: oh pulp fiction!
olivia: they're really putting that bass IN there A: is it- is it glee?
I like when they put bass heavy things
Fiona: he's wearing tails Lindsey: oh is this suicide squad is the dj the one in the suicide squad one with the red hair
and the face tattoo Kevin: oh his awww! Bruce Lee/Kill Bill. I'm not sure which one
L: I like this
it's like-
Lindsey: it's like pre-chorus (F: YAS QUEEN) that's like a long pre-chorus it feels like cause it's all definitely building
Peyton: I like the synth horn sounds they're using
KEvin: oh see, in the chorus the harmonies are more simple, but it's-but the beat
aw man, little slap bass. Come on. I'm a sucker for slap bass
Peyton: see, synth horn is fine, midi horn is sacrilidge
Hugo: oh! loving the auto-tune on their voices J: I like the effect
Lindsey: I'm getting like T-Pain vibes
Fiona: yeah its fun like they're---- LIndsey: this is 08 mile
fiona: the switch from um.. Lindsey: mom's spaghetti
The switch from English to Korean is fun
KEvin: And it's a rap verse, my mind is blown
KEvin: oh it's so- oh that piano line !
Kevin: Master piece! hey the song just might be that
James: what are you... Hugo: James Bond?
Peyton: Oh man got the Michael Jackson moves
Charlotte: yeah they got some very michael jackson esque dancing vibes
OH kill bill kill bill, yellow jumpsuit kill bill
LIdnsey: like.. it's a lot of just the piano line Fiona: yeah they bubble tea place we liek to go to
has music that sounds like this Lindsey: Yeah
Fiona: background like weird smooth jazz, but this is the better pop version Lindsey: but they're doing cool stuff over it though
So it's kind of cool
Keivn: aw man this piano. This piano just knows me this piano sinks deep
Fiona: Snap, snap represents the seconds left in his life before he explodes LIndsey: Yeah
James: Oh no
Hugo: Boom boom ***
fiona: yayyyyy lindsey: they saved him
I think.
I like the random trumpets
hugo: yaaaas
Hugo: Is that the lady and the ***? James: how do they get so high so easily? oh my god
Except they are pushing though
Fiona: i like this part LIndsey: the autotune part?
*sings* i''ll be your man
Kevin: I'll be your man!?!? cross referencing songs
Olivia: this is definitely more harmonically interesting A: yeah I like it
had a little bit of jazz elements in there
sevenths~ ohh defuse that bomb Aaron: oh wait, wait
aaron: ohhhh
Fiona: what? what?
Lindsey: That was cool. Umu: Yeah, so what do you think of that song musically Fiona: i'll be your man. I like robot guy.
Lindsey: I thought it was cool how they like used the auto-tune in there because everything about it was so like
Like there were so many different things happening in the video
And then the music wasn't as like diverse I think as the last song was but then they had that like robotic
Auto-tune section and I think it worked really well with the rest of it
Umu: So for those who don't know what MIDI versus synth trumpets are or brass
Can you explain? Peyton: Midi trumpet is kind of-- or MIDI like
Sounds in general are kind of like of the sounds you would get from like
notation software
Whenever you're writing music on like anything like one programs finale another one's Sibelius (who is also a composer)
But yeah, whenever you play the what you wroke back, that's like the sound you hear like that. It's kind of like
uh like- Charlotte: That's midi
Peyton: Yeah
Peyton: That's midi Charlotte: an then synth is when you have like a keyboard and like and the electronics they can actually switch
sounds so you can like press a button or select a setting that is like
Trumpet sound and then you can just play it on the keyboard and that's what that sounds like. Umu: So it's less painful to musicians
Charlotte: Yes, because the really high-end keyboards get pretty close. It's like if you auto-tune a trumpet you would get
the synth sound trumpet
KEvin: I think with this one the instrumentals definitely reign supreme
But also rapping over the free, the piano line that like basically doesn't have rhythm
Like all of the improv is free and rubato-y while the beat is strict and the rapping strict. It's a very cool effect
Isaac: I don't know. It just doesn't really hit me too hard with a lot of different things. It sounds very similar to
Umu: typical kpop?
Isaac: I can't say typical kpop-
Kevin: it does sound like typical kpop but it's still a good iteration of it
I thi- I guess it focused on the references more than the music
Kevin: It's so interesting that through these movie related music videos we get to see which western movies
permeate into Korean culture like in China Pulp Fiction is like what--- What's that?
But in Korea, it seems like people really like pulp fiction
hugo: Musically, it was dope their vocals again were dope, they were pushing a little bit as James said but
Overall pretty great. james: Yeah Umu: and what do you mean by pushing technically?
James: He's still very much in chest voice when he's singing in those high notes
And so that puts a lot of strain on your larynx
When you don't try and transition to head voice and go through your passadgio, and so that's bad
umu: *wheezes*
Umu: Okay, and what do you think of movie's music compared to I'll be your man's?
Kevin: I like I'll be your man more
Just because it it has that extra thing like the the spark that Isaac talks about for me
the rap verses in in I'll be your man hits it more and
Movies just uh, it's a chill- It's more chill surprisingly even with the funk
yeah movie sounded very very bland in terms of like different characters or colors Umu: but it used okay chords? Kevin: very
Okay chords, very good chords as a matter of fact Charlotte: they both followed like the same form Peyton: if I had to pick one
honestly, probably the movie just because it's a little happier, you know
And I need more like just random happy songs in my rep
You know Umu: what do you think of this song compared to I'll be your man since it was released like only a few months apart
Olivia: there's more going on
Aaron: But then the other one was like sexy this one was like fun
A: but the other one was- Olivia: this one was fun, but like I would like to listen to it more
Aaron: the other one was sexy though Lindsey: they were kind of similar you could tell that this group kind of has a style
Fiona: I liked this one more if it matters because I don't know. It's something about the last one about the chorus
I didn't really like like I didn't like the guitar or like something about the voice with this one
It just was a lot more like groovy and chill better vibe for me
Lidnsey: I like the first one better because I like how they layered all the different styles. I thought that was cool. Umu: Hello, everyone
