Hello! Welcome to E-com's monthly video in Spanish,
How's it going? How are you? Good? I hope so.
This month is the month of December and in Spain, we celebrate Christmas and the New Year like in the rest of the world,
but it's a little special, for example, What will we use these glasses for? What's in them?
We will explain a little later, and we will also talk about Spanish gastronomy,
Spanish cuisine: ham, paella, cheese, wine, which are known all around the world.
Let's start.
Okay, welcome to the monthly section. We will talk about the culture in Spain in the month of December.
What to the Spanish do in December?
Well, the night of the 24th, which we call la Nochebuena(Christmas Eve),
the Spanish meet with their families and eat lots of food and sing Christmas songs which we call villancicos.
The 31st is the last day of the year, and we call it la Nochevieja(New Year's Eve).
What do the Spanish do on New Year's Eve?
Well, they do the countdown, like many countries in the world, but it is done in a slightly special way,
for example, using grapes, and champagne, which we call cava, that is of Catalonian origin.
What do we do with the grapes?
Well, normally we eat 12 grapes and they are the last 12 chimes, that can be heard from the clock in the plaza de Madrid.
Each chime is one second, and these are the last 12 seconds of the year,
so, for example, "ping", a little stressful, but if you eat all the grapes, you can make a wish for the next year.
And the champagne, of course, when the event ends, we all toast and say,
"¡feliz años nuevo, salud!(Happy New Year, cheers!)" and drink, "Happy New Year."
Okay and now we will talk a little about gastronomy, Spanish cuisine, which you all like so much,
for example, who doesn't know paella? Yes, paella.
There are many types of paella, seafood paella, chicken paella, for example, meat paella,
also vegetable paella, or with squid ink, black rice.
Paella is typical of Valencia, although it is eaten in all of Spain and is known globally.
Another product that is very, very Spanish is jamón(ham).
There are also many types of jamón: jamón serrano, jamón ibérico
and jamón de bellota, which is the most expensive and the best quality.
Even the Spanish think that it is very expensive, so when it is exported abroad, it is also expensive,
but the quality is exquisite, excellent.
And the Spanish, when they have free time, they normally go to the bars and drink a lot
and eat what are called tapas, which are also known all over the world.
Which tapas are famous?
Well, many types of tapas, for example, olives, or, I don't know, squid or cheese, Manchego cheese, they are all famous,
and I would like to explain a bit culturally about why they are called tapas. What do you think?
Okay, I will explain, because it is a little difficult. Why are they called tapas?
Normally the Spanish in the olden days drank wine like in the rest of the world,
but when you drink wine without eating anything, a little... you get drunk.
For this reason, the Spanish ate tapas, which were free, and therefore are still eaten for free in the south of Spain,
and it was a piece of bread, basically, which was placed on the cup. The drink was served this way.
It is called tapa, because in Spanish "tapa" means "tapar algo(to cover something)", so the name tapa comes from here.
Well, you have learned something very important about Spanish culture, what a tapa is,
there are even some Spanish people that don't know it.
And well, what can I say about food with a good glass of Spanish wine? You should taste Spanish cuisine.
You should try to cook it too, because it is not so difficult to cook a paella, and who knows?
You may encounter a good restaurant next door.
Well, time to eat.
Well, we're finished for this month.
Have you studied a lot this year?
You need to study Spanish, right?
And we will study much more together the coming year.
So, with lots of energy, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. See you!
