The Whitby Campus right now is going through a transformation. Phase Two now under construction
is bringing back home construction, expansion of our HVAC systems and a further expansion
of our renewable technology.
We're actually going to have two residential labs, which are houses, right on the site
which is adjacent to Skills Two.
We're going to be moving the older home from Banting Avenue in Oshawa over to the site
at Whitby Campus.
We're gonna bring the crane in there, and lift that roof off and swing it over and put
it on the float. So that way when we leave we'll be able to hook the house up to the
tractor there and pull it. Then the other tractor with the float and the roof on it
will go behind and when we get over to the other site there we'll be able to lift it
up and put it on the other house there.
So helping us with the move and throughout this process moving the old house and the
new efficiency is a company called Durham Custom Homes. And Durham Custom Homes have
made the arrangements with Durham Regional Police. There will be an escort. They'll be
bringing it over and should be here onsite for the spring where they will be digging
the foundation and starting work on the new house.
The existing building envelope and the windows and the technology is intact. So students
will be able to go into a home like that, see how they were built, do energy audits,
and determine from that how they would retrofit that home.
In the spring we'll be building a second home, through a partnership with Durham Custom Homes,
is going to be a high-efficiency green home. It won't be like a model home you see at the
CNE. The studs will be there, the kitchen will be open, you'll be able to see the plumbing.
So they'll really be able to compare and see how things have improved, and how they will
continue to improve.
It works towards the concept of a living lab. So every stage we've talked about is to ensure
that students have an opportunity to work in those environments to see how in a real-world
setting how they're starting to prepare them for jobs within those sectors in the future.
It's not just about doing things like we did in the past, which is teaching carpentry.
It's about teaching the building trades but also a focus on energy efficiency and how
the technology has changed. It's about demonstrating to the community through a living lab environment
what can be done through a sustainable community. All of this has been done through partnerships.
Not only through government, but municipal government, regional governement, with industry,
with business, with personal donations. And that's been the strength of the college system.
We do it in partnership with the communities we serve.
