The Other Side of the Curtain
Episode 3
First contact
Good afternoon. Thanks for coming here one more time.
You did great at the audition the other day.
Today we are going to work on the musical issue.
I hope you are very looking forward to it.
I have told you that this is difficult because of all the effort it requires.
The only thing left is that Patri introduces you the story.
The story of Les Misérables. Whenever you like, Patri.
I quickly would like to explain what this musical is about.
As you know, it is Les Misérables, one of the most important musical shows.
This is an adaptation of the homonymous Victor Hugo’s work.
He was a nineteenth century author from the French realism movement.
We can see it in the dialectic language he uses in the work,
as well as in the final conclusion: the victory of the romanticism.
In order to make it, Victor Hugo tries to create a battle between rivals.
These characters are Javert and Jean Valejean.
Jean Valejean is prisoner guarded by Javert. To develop the play towards this conclusion
Victor Hugo introduces new elements, new characters, another historical context…
This last thing is what we know by Paris at the barricades.
There, it appears the love triangle between the key characters: Éponine, Cosette and Marius.
Marius is the autobiographical character of Victor Hugo himself.
He was one of the students who fought for a change against the absolutism,
which had been enslaving the society. He also fought against the neoclassicism
which supported a dehumanized and unprincipled rationality.
Thus, he tried to get out of it by looking away from it.
Eventually, that love triangle story will come to a dramatic end.
However, it will also bring hope for a better future for Victor Hugo
and for the France of those times.
To start working, we will begin with the cast of characters within the scene “One more day”.
There, all the characters who play some relevant role in the play appear.
Initially, I have thought of Alejandro to Play Marius’ role in this scene.
Quico would be Jean Valejean; And Patri would perform Javert’s role.
And who would Éponine and Cosette be?
Cosette... would be you, Andrea; And Éponine would be Arianne.
There’s another character called Fantine.
Rebeca and Adrian would play Miss and Mister Thénardier’s roles, respectively.
Finally, Enjolras would be performed by Carlos.
For those of you who don’t have an assigned role yet, I want you to know that,
from a theatrical level, you will have to work more due to the different registers
and variations that will appear in the musical.
This musical has different stages. That means that in a given moment
you can either be a beggar, a revolutionary, or a tavern keeper.
So, if you like, we start now and do something good out of it.
I will tell you how I want you to be placed. 49 00:05:38,00 --> 00:05:40,00 You, for instance, come here... and this will be your position, all right?
I am Andrea and I will play the character of Cosette, Fantine’s daughter.
Later on, Cosette is adopted by Jean Valejean and raised into a well-off environment.
She lives running away constantly without knowing why.
One day, walking along the street, she bumps into Marius and falls in love with him.
But his father has to escape again, and she cannot understand the reason why.
This is the role I like most, since I saw it in the film.
It is also a difficult role, But I will make it.
I will be Fantine, who is one of the feminine most miserable characters in the play.
It is also a very transcendental character, specially in Jean Valejean’s life.
Her presence is characterized by a strong drama.
She sacrifices her dignity for her daughter.
To interpret this character is necessary to make a sincerity exercise
because this character is very sincere emotionally.
Being able to face the audience with such deep feelings is something difficult
but it can be very positive and I can learn a lot from it.
My name is Quico and I will interpret Jean Valejean in this play.
I suppose that I have been chosen because of my age and experience. 67 00:07:16,00 --> 00:07:21,00 Carrying the whole work upon my shoulders is something really complicated
because he is one of the main characters in the play so he appears a lot in scene.
This is something I have never done before And I am a little bit scared.
I am convinced, however, that working hard And following the instructions it will go fine.
I am Carlos and I will play the character of Enjorlas.
He is the leader of a group of students who are in the barricades in Paris
trying to take the power away from the monarchy.
I am Carla and I have been chosen to interpret the people.
I am very excited because we have to put a lot of force on it.
I am glad I have to interpret this role.
Javert is a very rational and stereotyped character and he is also dehumanized and cruel.
He evolves since the moment he meets his antagonic carácter: Jean Valejean.
He evolves and generates a wealth of inanities that leads him to commit suicide.
It will be necessary a lot of work because it is a big challenge.
My name is Esther, and I will be the people as well.
This is a role with a lot of stamina. You have to give the best in you.
Marius, who stays with his friend during the revolution, falls in love with a girl.
Thus, he has to choose between keeping fighting or leaving with his love.
I guess this character suits me because we are The same age, approximately.
I like my character, although I would have liked to be the villain.
Éponine is the daughter of the Thénardiers and she is in love with Marius, even thought
he doesn’t love her. She is into the revolutionary movement as well.
This is a challenge because two very important features of interpretation are merged:
melancholy and force. This makes her an interesting character.
I will work hard to be up to the performance.
