The number one recommendation is to keep well hydrated. Most patients don't drink enough
water, the urine is relatively concentrated, and that can precipitate new stone growth.
So I really recommend six to eight glasses of water a day. There are some foods that
we eat that contain some substances that can promote stones, promote stone formation, and
depending on the type of stone that a patient has, we might tell them to restrict certain
foods that are rich in oxalate like spinach, tea and chocolate. Some of the good foods
we like to eat, unfortunately can promote stones.
