Seoul mulls raising taxi fares for September
in other news ... Taxi fares in Seoul haven't gone up in four years, but it looks like they're
about to. Commuters can expect to pay up to 800 won,
or about 72 cents, more than the base fare they're paying right now.
Our Lee Ji-yoon tells us more. If you live in Seoul and travel by taxi, get ready, because
it looks like fares could go up in September. If they do, it will be the first fare hike
since 2009. In that year, the base fare was fixed at 2-thousand-400
won,... or about two dollars and 14 cents,... for four years,... because of concerns about
increasing food and energy prices. This year's proposed fee hike could raise
the base fare by as much as 72 cents to two dollars and 86 cents.
Seoul residents.. are not so happy about the news, with some saying that any kind of fare
hike should be preceded by improvements in customer service.
"It's really hard to catch a taxi late at night because so many taxi drivers refuse
to take passengers, which is illegal. I think problems like that should be taken care of
first."
"How will the city guarantee quality taxi services ? I think that should be addressed
first before a fare hike."
Taxi drivers went on a nationwide strike early this year, saying that "unreasonably low taxi
fares" were causing them financial difficulty. Seoul Mayor Park Won-soon recently announced
that a taxi fare hike seems unavoidable amid rising oil prices.
He was also careful to address citizens' concerns about customer service.
"Once drivers see their work environments improve , it will likely lead to better customer
service, so we must consider the possibility of a fare hike."
The city of Seoul says it will continue to review the fare hike issue.. before making
its final decision in September. Lee Ji-yoon, Arirang News
