The First Book of Moses which is called : Genesis
The First Chapter
In principio creavit Deus cælum et terram. In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
Terra autem erat inanis et vacua, And the earth was without form, and void ;
et tenebræ erant super faciem abyssi : and darkness was upon the face of the deep.
et Spiritus Dei ferebatur super aquas. And the Spirit of God moved upon the waters.
Dixitque Deus : And God said,
Fiat lux. Let there be light :
Et facta est lux. and there was light.
Et vidit Deus lucem quod esset bona : And God saw the light, that it was good :
et divisit lucem a tenebris. and God divided the light from the darkness.
Appellavitque lucem Diem, And God called the light Day,
et tenebras Noctem : and the darkness he called Night.
factumque est vespere et mane, And the evening and the morning
dies unus. were the first day.
Dixit quoque Deus : And God said,
Fiat firmamentum in medio aquarum : Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters,
et dividat aquas ab aquis. and let it divide the waters from the waters.
Et fecit Deus firmamentum, And God made the firmament,
divisitque aquas, quæ erant sub firmamento, ab his, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters
quæ erant super firmamentum. which were above the firmament:
Et factum est ita. and it was so.
Vocavitque Deus firmamentum, Cælum : And God called the firmament Heaven.
et factum est vespere et mane, And the evening and the morning were
dies secundus. the second day.
Dixit vero Deus : And God said,
Congregentur aquæ, quæ sub cælo sunt, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together
in locum unum : unto one place,
et appareat arida. and let the dry land appear:
Et factum est ita. and it was so.
Et vocavit Deus aridam Terram, And God called the dry land Earth;
congregationesque aquarum appellavit Maria. and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas:
Et vidit Deus quod esset bonum. and God saw that it was good.
Et ait : Germinet terra herbam virentem, And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass,
et facientem ***, et lignum pomiferum faciens fructum juxta genus suum, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind,
cujus *** in semetipso sit super terram. whose seed is in itself, upon the earth:
Et factum est ita. and it was so.
Et protulit terra herbam virentem, And the earth brought forth grass,
et facientem *** juxta genus suum, and herb yielding seed after his kind,
lignumque faciens fructum, and the tree yielding fruit,
et habens unumquodque sementem secundum speciem suam. whose seed was in itself, after his kind:
Et vidit Deus quod esset bonum. and God saw that it was good.
Et factum est vespere et mane, And the evening and the morning were
dies tertius. the third day.
Dixit autem Deus : And God said,
Fiant luminaria in firmamento cæli, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven
et dividant diem ac noctem, to divide the day from the night;
et sint in signa et tempora, et dies et annos : and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:
ut luceant in firmamento cæli, And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven
et illuminent terram. to give light upon the earth:
Et factum est ita. and it was so.
Fecitque Deus duo luminaria magna : And God made two great lights;
luminare majus, ut præesset diei : the greater light to rule the day,
et luminare minus, ut præesset nocti : and the lesser light to rule the night:
et stellas. he made the stars also.
Et posuit eas in firmamento cæli, And God set them in the firmament of the heaven
ut lucerent super terram, to give light upon the earth,
et præessent diei ac nocti, And to rule over the day and over the night,
et dividerent lucem ac tenebras. and to divide the light from the darkness:
Et vidit Deus quod esset bonum. and God saw that it was good.
Et factum est vespere et mane, dies quartus. And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.
Dixit etiam Deus : And God said,
Producant aquæ reptile animæ viventis, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life,
et volatile super terram sub firmamento cæli. and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven.
Creavitque Deus cete grandia, And God created great whales,
et omnem animam viventem atque motabilem, and every living creature that moveth,
quam produxerant aquæ in species suas, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind,
et omne volatile secundum genus suum. and every winged fowl after his kind:
Et vidit Deus quod esset bonum. and God saw that it was good.
Benedixitque eis, dicens : And God blessed them, saying,
Crescite, et multiplicamini, et replete aquas maris : Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas,
avesque multiplicentur super terram. and let fowl multiply in the earth.
Et factum est vespere et mane, dies quintus. And the evening and the morning were the fifth day.
Dixit quoque Deus : And God said,
Producat terra animam viventem in genere suo, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind,
jumenta, et reptilia, et bestias terræ secundum species suas. cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind:
Factumque est ita. and it was so.
Et fecit Deus bestias terræ juxta species suas, et jumenta, And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind,
et omne reptile terræ in genere suo. and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind:
Et vidit Deus quod esset bonum, and God saw that it was good.
et ait : Faciamus hominem ad imaginem et similitudinem nostram : And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness:
et præsit piscibus maris, and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea,
et volatilibus cæli, et bestiis, universæque terræ, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth,
omnique reptili, quod movetur in terra. and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
Et creavit Deus hominem ad imaginem suam : So God created man in his own image,
ad imaginem Dei creavit illum, in the image of God created he him;
masculum et feminam creavit eos. male and female created he them.
Benedixitque illis Deus, et ait : And God blessed them, and God said unto them,
Crescite et multiplicamini, et replete terram, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth,
et subjicite eam, et dominamini piscibus maris, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea,
et volatilibus cæli, et universis animantibus, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing
quæ moventur super terram. that moveth upon the earth.
Dixitque Deus : And God said,
Ecce dedi vobis omnem herbam afferentem *** super terram, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth,
et universa ligna quæ habent in semetipsis sementem generis sui, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed;
ut sint vobis in escam : to you it shall be for meat.
et cunctis animantibus terræ, And to every beast of the earth,
omnique volucri cæli, and to every fowl of the air,
et universis quæ moventur in terra, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth,
et in quibus est anima vivens, ut habeant ad vescendum. wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat:
Et factum est ita. and it was so.
Viditque Deus cuncta quæ fecerat, And God saw every thing that he had made,
et erant valde bona. and, behold, it was very good.
Et factum est vespere et mane, And the evening and the morning were
dies sextus. the sixth day.
