- We've worked on several other projects using "Nava Spaţială" as a moniker
-It's like...I don't think it has to do with anything, really...
except with what we will do from now on...
-Initially, we started off by building some installations on which we would project stuff.
That was also called "Nava Spatiala''.
And after that, i wanted to start another project with Miron
but we had no idea how to name it.
-We considered changing our name on every occasion.
That meant having a new identity and a new Soundcloud profile for each recording session.
In the end, we decided to stick with the name ''Nava Spatiala''
so that it could be easier to recognize
and to have a sort of continuity regarding our sound research.
We might change our sample sets every day,
But still end up getting the same sonic results somehow...
starting from a small sound fragment or a pre-recorded sample,
-Or even from o pop song...
in the end, it doesn't actually matter.
The idea is that we never do the same thing twice.
-You can use absolutely any input you choose.
You can place a contact microphone upon o layer of tinplate while it's raining
and have live feed in Ableton.
-We have a couple of perfusion devices at our workshop, we took 'em from one of our friends, a doctor
and you can basically set the rate at which the liquid drips from it,
thus creating all sorts of rhythms
which you can later on turn into piano samples and whatnot.
-One of the first sessions we ever actually managed to record
because many times we ended up having to restart Ableton Live or crap like that
or cables working differently every time
-Yeah...we're not really that professional in our work, as you can see...
-What do you mean by ''professional''?
- I mean that we don't really collect gear or have any gear
-When something breaks down, we usually seal the button up so we know not to use it anymore.
- For me the output is the only thing that matters
I don't have "external" gear
I don't have any effect on top of everything or synths or something like that
I don't even have a professional soundcard
-We try to shred the sounds as much as we can,
even if we start from the synthesis or from field recording.
For example, when we played at the ''Simultan'' Festival
(the show taking place in a synagogue)
we had some samples from The Dead Sea
I had a friend who went there this Easter and recorded them from us
-We used to do live rehearsals
because we literally gathered everything we had
and also picked up new ideas on the run
and played them live the following day.
Many times, we find ourselves not knowing where the sound is actually coming from.
-The fact that we like surprises is the element that binds us the most.
- It's really cool to rehearse without a tight schedule
because it becomes organic after awhile.
-It depends on what type of music you actually make because,
taking Mediocracy for example (crust/hardcore band from Bucharest, Romania)
they really have to rehearse a lot more than us.
-I prefer working from home.
I've been working for 10 years now and I can definitely say that home is where I feel best.
That's why most of the time, I would rather work from home,
than go somewhere else to do something.
So there's this guy that has two of these copper bars
and some sort of a sound device
something like this i guess but reverted somehow
and you can do bioresonance therapy with this
So the sound just gets in some sort of a transformer
and the frequency of the sound changes gradually
and you literally feel the electricity running through your body
-I'm a sculptor.
I also do tattoos sometimes...
but professionally, I am a sculptor.
That over there is a ''work in progress'' for a friend (Fane).
I also do replicas of ancient coins.
-All my work can be summed up under the name ''Nava Spatiala''.
It's sort of a journey for me.
It doesn't matter if it's sound or something tangible, like sculpture.
-I think this is what really makes it for both of us
It's practically the love for the things you create yourself
and for the moment when you create.
it has become a sort of addiction and it keeps you creating...
-Because in this scene you will never get to have a lot of followers
or the change to go commercial with whatever it is you do.
The fact that we will never have the opportunity to ''sell out'' is very important to us.
We are in an area of music
that doesn't even give you the temptation of actually selling out.
it has nothing to do with anything of that kind
-I think that we produce more that we can actually consume.
-When you say ''we'' do you mean ''we'' as a project, or ''we'' in general?
- The Earth
-I think ''we'' as in the whole galaxy.
-This is the most expensive piece of equipment I own.
-I consider that too few of the projects that actually matter
get to where they're supposed to.
And I don't necessarily think that this happens because
of the system itself or the system of values that the public has.
It's more likely because those that actually manage to produce something ''ok''
don't really care about putting it out.
-You mean that they're not really interested in advertising their work
and that sort of nonsense...
- And people who experiment with sound
aren't really used with sharing their private laboratory with the public.
- They would be getting feedback the second they move their private ''laboratory'' out for the world to see.
Not everyone is comfortable with that.
Any polished project is the direct result of the work of a group of people,
and when these people will start to get out of their private places,
even with making tutorials or by simply publishing their work.
Then, more and more artists would start collaborating,
and eventually everything would come to a natural course,
without any institues, gouvernements and that sort of things.
-The only thing that matters is my imagination and how I want to express that in my work.
That's about it...
I try to make use of everything that surrounds me.
Obviously, I try to experiment as much as I can.
I try to look for new things,
new connections,
new results, you know...
but I'm not interested in creating or achieving something specific.
I just intend on letting my imagination fly and to see where it takes me.
And obviously to feel good about it in the end.
-It's important to transmit something to the audience...
