"Stone face, even though I smile"
I felt that something was not right.
I knew that I had Parkinson´s disease.
As I have been working in health care for so many years it was not difficult to diagnose myself.
Almost as long as I can remember I wanted to be a midwife.
When I was a little girl I first wanted to be an Ice Princess, but then I changed and wanted to be a midwife.
I don´t deliver babies anymore because I can´t handle the stress.
When people think about Parkinson´s disease,
most people picture a stiff and shaking old man with a cane.
That is the general perception.
Yes, but that is not the case. Parkinson´s has so many different symptoms that may not be visible to others,
such as being slow and stiff, and the voice gets weaker.
That the voice gets weaker.
Yes, that is right, and your brain slows down too.
Yes, one is slow with everything. The brain perceives things slower.
Insomnia is really common.
I have had big problems sleeping.
I have had a lot of nightmares and have been screaming and moving about wildly at night.
One gets so stiff in the face also,
as the muscles there stiffen. It makes it difficult to tell the emotions of a person with Parkinson´s.
It is almost like a politician, no expression, a stone face.
I have noticed that in photos, especially now when we were in South Africa.
I thought I looked really happy, smiling as much as I could,
but I noticed that I didn´t look happy at all.
Parkinson´s is such an individual disease that you can´t compare yourself to someone else.
You learn very quickly that there are many variations.
Many people are younger than you might expect. I didn´t know this.
One lives in the here and now.
You never know what tomorrow will bring.
I sometimes think that Parkinson´s has given me a lot.
It is nice to think about that when life feels sad and unfair.
In a way, life feels richer because of Parkinson´s.
Around 20 000 Swedes have Parkinson´s disease.
A neurological disease affecting movement and mobility, but also sleep, cognition, speech etc.
