A Spanish zest for life, also forms a vital part of this cosmopolitan city
with its amazing artistic and cultural heritage and passionate people,
no city on earth is more alive than Madrid.
Despite its historic roots 'Puerta del Sol' and its surrounding streets
are one of the most modern and liveliest areas of the city.
With so many of Madrid's principal attractions within walking distance
it's the perfect location to start your sightseeing.
Here is the famous kilometre zero stone, the official stating point
for Spain's six national roads
and the bear and strawberry tree, a bronze work which is known
as the official symbol of the city.
The royal palace with its 2800 rooms
is the lavish site of royal events, although
it's not home to the royal family any longer.
Great atmosphere, lots of nice restaurants
and a touch of history, this is Plaza Mayor.
The square serves as a meeting place for tourists
and locals alike. It has hosted a variety of festivities
throughout history - including bull-fights, soccer matches
and executions during the Spanish Inquisition.
Eating tapas is something you definitely need to try
if you are in Madrid.
Madrid has so many astonishing museums,
but if we needed to pick one we would recommend Prado Museum,
as it has one of the largest art collections in the world.
Allow yourself at least three hours to enjoy the works
of Velázquez, Goya and El Greco.
