Giannis Davaris
-Dimitris Davaris
-Ioannis Mylonas
-Nikiforos Mylonas
And we are the Jet Black
With Giannis and Dimitris we've been friends since the first grade
Although at first we were constantly fighting so we weren't that close
So I can't really say we started off as friends
But after the second grade we started to share our school lunch with each other
[Laughing]
We found out we actually had a lot of things in common
And in time we became closer
-In the third grade I was influenced by two friends of mine who started to play the classical guitar
and because my father used to take me and my brother to live concerts since we were four years old
we had mostly rock influences from early on
So I thought it was time for me to get involved with music and start playing
It was predestined to happen I just didn't know when
So I started to play the classical guitar and kept playing it for about two years
But then I stopped it and started playing simple tracks
Actually only simple in theory because when you really look at them they are pretty great
They have influenced many groups of friends over the years
With three to four notes
So even though I reached a good level for my age, I later forgot everything
And I was left playing the "Smoke on the Water" and "Iron Man"
So I changed my mind and started lessons again in a conservatory
And started taking music more seriously because even though I had a good start I messed it up
Because of rock music
If I was older I'd be more careful
That's my story about music and now I try to continue learning on my own
-I remember from childhood as Ioannis said that when we went to concerts
With our father when we were kids at three or four years old
I always enjoyed drums and percussion instruments in general and I was always fascinated by them
So I always had in mind that I'd like learn how to play something like that at some point
By the end of the sixth grade I wanted to be more involved with music as I was strongly moved by it
And I expressed that to my mother and father
So I went to a nearby music school for a year and was improving on a fast pace from the beginning
My teacher thought I had a talent for it so I was very pleased
After that first year
My Teacher
Went to the X Factor with his band
-You don't say?
[Laughing]
-So I couldn't continue my lessons
On the second year he was back so I had another lesson with him in my house because he left the music school
And
On my third year where I was taking drum lessons again
He enlisted in the army so we stopped our lessons again
-This guy rocks
-Yeah so
-Excuses he just didn't want to tutor you
[Laughing]
-Maybe a was way too talented
[Laughing]
-He was overwhelmed
-So because I really liked that teacher not that it was anything special but I felt a love for music in his class
I didn't bother looking for a new teacher and continued learning on my own from then on
And now with the band we're getting more involved so I improve my skills with them
And I think I'm producing something beautiful
That's all from me
-So back in primary school I was tuned into the same music with the guys
We listened to rock we listened to heavy metal
We were somewhere in that spectrum
I remember I didn't specifically listen to the songs but rather watch YouTube videos of live concerts
In the sixth grade I started out with classical guitar but it only lasted for a year
Because I didn't want to go to music school
Why?
Because I knew I wouldn't like it due to the fact that there were going to be other kids there
And that meant that some kids there were going to be better than me and I wanted to be the best at what I did
So I hired a tutor
A countryman
-Mr. Vangelis
-Mr.Vangelis
[Laughing]
-His ringtone was a greek country song
[Laughing]
[Clarinet sounds]
-Mr. Vangelis who was teaching me folk songs
[Laughing]
So I thought I have to stop doing this
-He was a cool guy though I wish him well
-I wish him well too he was a cool guy indeed
But he was only into country music
I called him after the first year and told him I don't like that type of music and that I want to play rock
So he tried to teach me songs like "Smoke on the Water"
So that tutor wasn't right for the music I was interested in and I asked him to recommend me someone else
He told me to go to this awesome guy who also played bouzouki and to give him a call
So I called him and arranged a lesson
-Mr. Giannis right?
-Yes Mr. Giannis
He showed up on the first day in a crumbling car that looked like it was about to die or something
He ringed the bell and then entered with a bouzouki in his hand
We sit
I drink a glass of milk he drinks his coffee
And I remember him asking me what type of music do I listen to
I said AC/DC and Black Sabbath so he gets the metal zone the first pedal I ever bought
And connected it to his bouzouki
So he starts playing and it was so good that I almost started drooling
and I was hooked
The next day I went to a store and bought an electric guitar with like a hundred euro just so I can start playing
After that we continued our lessons by meeting twice a week
Because the previous teacher only taught me chords (accorda)
Accorda!
[Laughing]
The new one taught me mostly pentatonic scale and scales in general
And I still remember him teaching me that no matter how much you practice your left hand
It will always be fine but your right hand is the key when it comes to playing the guitar
And that's were I truly started to pay attention to him
He also taught me a special exercise for the right hand and thanks to it when I play my right hand is on fire
-On fire huh?
- Of course
[Laughing]
Two years after that I stopped the lessons because I had to focus on school which I didn't
Then we formed the band and form that point on I was self-taught by watching free lessons on YouTube
And I still continue
-I started playing music much later than the rest of the guys
They started in primary school while I started in high school
And around the time my brother had lessons with Mr. Vangelis as he mentioned before
I played a bit with my brother's classical guitar and I didn't like it
Actually It's not that I didn't like it I just couldn't play
[Laughing]
And then the guys told me they were forming a band and needed a bass player
I didn't know what they meant
[Laughing]
So since my brother was joining them and I didn't want to be left out I thought of learning the bass guitar
I found a really good sale from a friend of the guys
-You should tell the real story here
You got jealous of your brother
-Yeah right
[Laughing]
-So we came in touch and he offered me a good deal for a bass guitar along with the necessary equipment
When I took it I realized it was huge I thought it would be this big but it was more like this big
With four strings
-How big was it again?
-Very big
And so I began and then later on Mr. Giannis came into the picture as my brother mentioned before
I told him I play bass guitar and he did too among many other instruments
After two to three lessons I realized it wasn't as simple at it seemed despite only having four notes
But step by step you unlock new things because it provides rhythm
And the better the rhythm the better the whole of the band
Long story short I worked on it and after improving
I quit my tutoring sessions because of other obligations I had after six months
And from then on I developed through the band because at first we couldn't play in harmony
So I learned how to play in harmony with Nikiforos until it became second nature
At first our sound was boring and unpleasant and just enough to serve as practice
But then after the first two months it became better and better because we practiced every week
-We were hooked
-Exactly
Eventually I fully joined the band and I've been part of it ever since
