Seth Rollins And Dean Ambrose Didn’t Know What To Do After The Shield Split
For two-and-a-half years, The Shield was the most dominant faction in WWE.
Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins, and Roman Reigns rose to prominence and popularity as they took out some of the company’s top stars including Triple H and the revival of his Evolution alliance.
But on the June 2, 2014, edition of Raw, Rollins backstabbed his Shield counterparts and sided with The Authority.
All three members then headed different ways in singles competition, with Reigns being pushed as the new face of the WWE, though the fans have universally rejected and booed him.
As for Rollins and Ambrose, they moved all over the place with different feuds and storylines. In fact, both men admitted they often had struggles when The Shield disbanded.
On a WWE Network episode of Table For 3, all three members sat down to discuss their post-Shield careers. Here’s how Rollins explained his struggles, in part.
“I remember feeling, for a while, like, so… the aloneness of it set in so much because we were relying on each other so much… It was almost like I had forgotten how to be like a singles wrestler again.
I was like, ‘oh man, what do I have to do? Now they’re putting me in the ring and I’m doing these 10-minute promos,’ and I’m like, ‘ah, where, urgh…’ I was like, ‘come on, what’s going on?’ It was very intimidating.”.
Rollins would become one of the top heels on the roster, and would capture the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania 31.
In the midst of his title reign, Rollins tore his ACL during a house show in a match against Roman Reigns. He had to drop the title, which Reigns eventually won. Rollins would regain the title when he returned months later.
As for Ambrose, he opened up about his struggles in being a singles competitor while properly appealing to the crowd. Here’s what he said, in part.
“I didn’t know what to do. As soon as that went down, and I was definitely not prepared to try to make people like me and I didn’t think they would.
I was always… throughout the whole thing, I was kind of trying to make it like, ‘I’m kind of the a**hole here… was always trying to plant those little seeds in everybody’s head.
And then, all-of-a-sudden, it was like, ‘oh, if nobody likes me, this isn’t going to work very well.”.
Ambrose also added that he simply wasn’t going to “not try at all”, by wearing the same attire, avoid a special entrance and to simply “come to the ring and start fighting people.
It’s safe to say all three members of The Shield somewhat struggled in singles competition. Reigns hasn’t been accepted as the next babyface of WWE by fans, who have mercilessly booed him despite playing a good guy character.
Ambrose and Rollins bounced from feud-to-feud but didn’t quite get over as huge stars.
With The Shield seemingly back together again (when Roman Reigns returns), perhaps all three men will be able to take their careers to new heights, but at the end of the day, there shouldn’t be any doubt that all three me have to be pleased about being a team again.
