Okay Aamer. Can you tell me what your nationality is, where you studied in Scotland, and what
your course was? RES Well, I’m Indian by birth, and I came
for my Masters degree to the University of Strathclyde, and I did my MSc in Business
and Management. INT And why did you choose to come to Scotland
to study? RES Well, the University was a big draw for
myself. The University of Strathclyde has quite a decent ranking. I knew ex-students
from here. My manager, under whom I was working back in India, she was an ex-MBA from Strathclyde.
So that was a bit of, sort of more knowledge about it, and looked up the rankings, looked
up... speaking to ex-students, sort of started to understand a bit more how it worked. And
from what I heard from other people, and sort of what I wanted to study in my Business and
Management degree, I found that in the course at the University of Strathclyde, so that
sort of prompted me to pick the University of Strathclyde to study.
INT Great. And what is your career goal? RES My career goal at the moment is to finish
my accountancy qualification, but on another note, it’s basically to sort of grow within
KPMG where I am actually working. So it’s to grow towards the path which I have picked
up for myself, and move towards becoming a Manager, hopefully, soon enough.
INT And when you were looking for full-time work, what sources of help and advice did
you use, and how useful did you find them? RES I did use the Career Services of the University
of Strathclyde a bit. I tried to understand the way interviews were held. There is quite
a good guidance on the website, and there are always counsellors around for you to ask
them. The websites of companies are a big help as well, especially if you look at bigger
companies such as KPMG, or the other big four, there is quite a lot of information on them
for you to read and understand how it works. You have to be a bit more aware of the rules,
regulations, regarding international students as well, so you need to make sure the employers
you’re applying to entertain international students. It’s quite easy. Sometimes people
have a mental block that perhaps it’s not feasible for international students to get
the job, where it really is not, especially in Scotland with the rules governing international
students working here. INT Okay. And where would you advise other
international graduate jobseekers to look for help and advice?
RES Well, I would definitely tell them to first apply to KPMG. Well, not for any other
reason, it’s just that it’s quite a help and it’s been fantastic. I’ve been with
them for two years now, and I really enjoy working with KPMG. But apart from that, it
depends on what they want to do. I think students sometimes need to sort of have a look back
and say, ‘Right, what do I need to do?’ If something which interests them, there are
loads of employers, and they just need to know what they want to do and what they would
be happy doing, and then contact them, contact the Career Services. I would really say, have
a good session with one of the counsellors at the Career Services and try to understand
what sort of things they would want to do in life, and how does their education intertwine
itself with that. Just another thing, University of Strathclyde, what I really liked, and what
is really helping me in my job at the moment, is the practical learning. You know, they
promote themselves as a place of useful learning, and you actually start realising that it’s
not just theory and what you read in the books, but sometimes when you go into practice, you’ve
done those things before in class already, and it’s really a big help.
INT And was there anything when you were looking or researching for full-time work, was there
anything that didn’t help or you didn’t find so useful?
RES Well, there are always going to be some dead links which you approach, but I think
that’s part and parcel of searching for full-time work, and students should learn
to sort of accept some places where they won’t get help, and search for the ones which they
get and go ahead with that. So I think searching for full-time work as students, and especially
international students, you should be prepared to sort of meet some places, or meet some
links, where you’re not going to get information, and meet some links, meet some people, where
you’re going to get loads of information, and then just run with that. That’s what
I would advise to anybody who is searching for full-time work. Be prepared for some bits
of failures, some bits in which you would not do well, but then just keep hope that
you will get something which really interests you and excites you.
INT Mm-mm, okay. And what do you think the most valuable assets international graduates
have that they can offer employers? RES I think diversity, especially nowadays.
I t could be anything. I am an engineer by my previous degree, and then came into Business
Management which was a change, and then moving on to do Finance. And this is one of the reasons
which I picked up KPMG so that I could do my accpountancy education, because I was actually
having a paradigm shift from engineering into finance. But the fact is, I work in Aberdeen,
which has a lot of oil companies, and when I talk to them, they talk sometimes technical
stuff, which is quite easy for me to understand how the business works. And even now, when
you’re talking business and everything, there are so much Asian companies doing well
globally, and you can just contribute in terms of culture, in terms of understanding how
different people would work, in terms of making sure that whom you are working relies on whom
they’re working with as well, because you’re going to have people in the opposed party
who are going to be from various parts of the world, and if you understand that part
of the world, it helps you sort of make your team aware of them as well, which I think
that is where I think I can contribute towards my company, and I hope I have.
INT And have you any advice that you would give to other international graduates seeking
work in Scotland? RES A bit more clarity, actually, in their
own thoughts. That is something which I sometimes find that people who come and start looking
for work, they’re just ready to pick up what they want, or rather what they get, quite
soon. I think it’s best to take a step backward and make sure that they really want to do
what they want to do, and just go through the process. I think sometimes when, as students,
the process seems very overwhelming and it seems quite difficult. But now when I look
back, six months down the line, I really miss that period of work in which I was searching
for a job and going through the process of interviews, applications, and students will
actually miss that. I know it sounds a bit weird, but they’ll actually miss the period
of actually looking for work and the excitement of looking where their career is going to
take them. And I think they should really not be deterred by failure, not be deterred
by some rejection letters. I remember my friends telling them they had a pile of rejection
letters and they could just read the first sentence and it was, ‘There it goes - another
one rejection.’ But I would just advise to keep at it; it helps. It helps you face
in the future as well, because you’re always going to get some bits which don’t go your
way, and I think facing some bits and failures is a stepping stone and you sort of enjoy
it a bit later. INT And are there any messages you would like
to pass on to potential employers of international graduates?
RES I think it’s become much better now because when we joined in, the rules were
changing for international students and not many local employers knew about this. It was
not a case with big companies. Big companies already knew of the various rules which have
changed; it was not an issue at all. But sometimes local employers were not very aware of the
rules changing and that students are allowed to work, and work on for two years, after
which there are various schemes which the student can arrange for themselves rather
than the employer having to do so. So I think it’s very important for the employers to
be aware of the various rules as well, that students are allowed to work in Scotland for
two years without requiring the employer to sponsor on a work permit, and after two years
there are various options for the student himself to move on for a highly skilled migration
programme. And I think the employers need to be a bit more aware of that, that they
do not have to do so much administrative work which can be off-putting, and understandably
so, that it can be off-putting that, ‘Oh, if I’m picking up something there might
be so much paperwork.’ But sometimes it’s not, especially if it’s Scotland, with the
rules of Scotland allowing students to work. It’s not.
INT That’s great. Thanks very much. END
