I first went to Dungeness, I think it was 1989
to photograph Derek
It was like landing on the moon
Prospect Cottage is a small black fisherman's cottage
painted with tar
It has a small domestic garden
but with no fences
so the garden goes all the way to the horizon, in every direction
It's a very special place for me
I spent a lot of time here gardening with Derek
It's a garden without the normal conventions of gardening
there are no borders, no fences
no soil, for that matter
just shingled and it's lovely
and you're invited to garden with nature
The end of the road is Dungeness Nuclear Power Station
By day, it hums menacingly
and at night it glows like the Emerald City
on the horizon
It's very special, it connects to the landscape
in such a lovely way
It becomes part of the landscape
and with landscape
the wildness becomes part of the garden
