>> ANCHOR: U.S. Senator Charles Schumer says he's going to fight against proposed cuts
to fuel-cell research that could have a major impact on some of the work that's going on
in our area. Schumer's office says that Congress plans to cut $37 million from the Department
of Energy's fuel-cell program. He says that would impact research going on at RIT, the
University of Rochester, GM's Honeoye fuel center, and Delphi. Schumer says he'll use
all of his clout in asking the Senate's appropriations committee to not make the cuts.
>> SEN. SCHUMER: $40 million is a lot of money. But it's a drop in the bucket compared to
what we'll save once this technology is developed. And it's a drop in the bucket compared to
the economic benefit that will be pumped into the Rochester economy. If we stay the center
of fuel-cell research and then fuel-cell manufacturing, the best days for the Rochester economy are
to come in the future.
>> ANCHOR: Schumer's office says that studies have shown that the fuel-cell industry could
create up to 700,000 new jobs in the next 10 to 20 years.
