>>UH Manoa student narrator Mark Rulona: The University of Hawaii at Manoa has launched
WeCar, a new car sharing service for it's students, faculty and staff. The program allows
members to rent a WeCar vehicle on the Manoa campus for personal or business use. It can
be rented by the hour, for a full day or overnight.
>>UH Manoa Chancellor Tom Apple: We have problems with traffic and we have problems with sustainability
and energy usage. And so by having the WeCar, people can take mass transit to get to campus,
or public transit, and then if they have an errand to run, they can use the WeCar.
>>Mark Rulona: Manoa Chancellor Tom Apple took one of the three hybrid WeCars for a
spin after a recent blessing ceremony. The program, which is already being utilized on
college campuses across the country, is one of the many ways UH Manoa is combating traffic
congestion and the lack of parking.
>>Transportation Management Coordinator Crysttal Atkins: About 43 percent of our affiliates,
our faculty, staff and students, live within three miles of the campus. So those are very
commutable distances. And what we can do to help people leave those cars home in those
commutable distances is give them things like WeCar.
>>Mark Rulona: You must be over 21 years old and have a valid driver's license and credit
card. You'll receive a swipe key after your online application is approved. It unlocks
the vehicle that you reserved online. The keys are in the glove box and when you are
finished, you return it to its designated parking spot locked with the keys inside.
It cost ten to twelve dollars an hour, which covers gas, maintenance and insurance.
>>Crysttal Atkins: So again, you have a car available to you when you need it. You are
not paying for it when you don't.
