My name is Melvin G. Williams Jr. I'm a Vice
Admiral in the United States Navy assigned to
Norfolk, Virginia. I reported to my first
submarine as a Junior Officer, Ensign Williams.
It was awesome, it was a relatively small
submarine but very, very capable. And I really
learned a lot about - ah - accomplishing
mission and I learned a lot about leadership.
And I'll always remember my first command tour.
Well my boss is Admiral John Greenert, he's
the 4 star in charge of the command, and I'm
his Deputy Commander. At our headquarters we
have about 650 people but the responsibility
that we have goes throughout the Navy. Today's
Navy values diversity. It is so very very
important in what we do in order to accomplish
our mission. Any young person who enters who
has skills and desire, the Navy will give you a
chance. Within the Navy, you find that part of
our service is the fact that we all are exposed
and inculcated with the same values. And so
with shared values, what you find is
camaraderie. And so you have people helping
people within the Navy. It's one - it's an
opportunity where by you'll be challenged.
Ah for me, ah - I'm an individual who enjoys
challenges. And if you're like me, if you wanna
test yourself to see whether or not you're
worthy, I would consider joining the Navy.
