Hey guys welcome to Cool Bits where we point out our favorite moments from popular and
maybe not so popular games. These Cool Bits might be a secret, an Easter Egg, or just
a small detail that really resonated with us.
This time we'll be taking a look at some Penguin secrets in Super Mario 64.
So if you've dropped by Mario 64's Cool Cool Mountain before, then you've surely met the
Penguins that live there. And they come in two sizes: small and freakishly large--at
least by real-world standards. But if you think that's big, you haven't seen anything
yet...
Now typically when you enter the cottage during the 3rd-Star Mission, you'll find an adult
penguin that claims to be the world champion sledder--and he'll challenge you to a race
in order to prove it. But if you manage to beat him to the finish line, he'll congratulate
you on your victory and award a power-star/ You know, he's a surprisingly good sport despite
just losing his world champion title
But it seems that he might have actually taken the loss a bit harder than he lets on, because
check out what happens if you revisit him AFTER you've completed the game and collected
the rest of the game's 120-Power Stars--which is no quick feat.
Whoa--the former champion's packed on a few extra pounds in the time since you last saw
him! And he'll even explain that it's because he hasn't been practicing recently. Yep, it
seems that Mario's victory was so crushing, that the poor guy lost all willpower to stay
in shape! Yikes. But his pain is our gain, as this is a cool little detail that's only
revealed to the most dedicated of Mario 64 players.
But he's not the only penguin with problems, as another one found elsewhere in the level
has lost her baby! But if Mario find and returns the missing nestling, she'll express her thanks
and give Mario another Power Star. But now that you've gotten what you came for, what
happens if you try to steal the baby back.
Yeeeeeah, the mother's not having any of that, as she'll chase you around with a disapproving
look on her face. In fact, the bond between mother and child is so strong, the nestling
will automatically walk to her whenever they're close--aren't they just so cute together.
And the cuteness doesn't end there, because check out what happens if you perform a dive
when near the baby penguin. Aww, look, she copied Mario's move perfectly. Not only is
she adorable, but she's a fast learner too!
Who knew there these Penguins were hiding so many secrets! It's no wonder this level's
called Cool Cool Mountain!
And that wraps it up for this episode of Cool Bits for Super Mario 64. Thanks for watching
