Sisters and brothers first let me thank
Brother Jérôme Turcq my nominator
and Brother John MacLennan my seconder
I am running for president of the PSAC
because I believe I can make a difference.
I can make a difference because I know this union
and its diverse structures
and I respect the members we serve.
I can make a difference because I can mediate
and if mediation is not possible I can negotiate
and if negotiation fails I have the strength
to make the hard decisions.
One way or the other our union must come together
and emerge more united.
Because sisters and brothers our challenge
is not in this room.
Or in the workplaces from coast to coast to coast
But on Bay Street and in the House of Commons.
Because a union divided will never be strong.
I am running for president
because I believe I can make a difference.
I can make a difference in dealing with the government
Because I know what it takes for political action
It's more than statements or press releases
Or a slogan.
You can't negotiate with the devil
And you can't negotiate with
Harper, Clement or Flaherty.
They understand nothing more than power
and public opinion.
And that is what we're up against.
We need to take to the streets.
We need to reject them at the ballot box.
And we need to stand up and say 'no'.
No to cuts to public services,
No to job cuts that devastate our communities
and 'no' to concessions.
Sisters and brothers we need a new voice in Ottawa
A voice that will effect change at a time
when we need it most.
A voice that will stress fiscal responsibility
A voice that will not be silenced.
But more importantly a voice
that will be there for all of us.
Components, Regions, DCLs, Equity Members,
Young workers, every step of the way.
That voice, brothers and sisters, is mine.
A union united can never be defeated.
The union is the members
and the members are the union.
Together we can do it.
I respectfully ask for your support.
Merci beaucoup.
[Applause]
