Hello everyone. Some of you wanted a more visual explanation of what to do for lab / exercise
1. Exercise 1 Learning About The Natural World will be due with the chapter 1 items. Normally
you'd do a lab like this in a traditional lab, but with an online class, we will improvise
to do as much as we can in a home setting. Start off reading the introduction here, look
at the objectives. Next it is probably a good idea to read through the whole lab to get
an idea of what you'll be doing. Ideally, after you read the lab you should be able
to answer the prelab questions. #1-10 on page 7. Now back to the beginning. Read the materials
you will need. Blindfold. Small Crystal Thermometer. Instead of beakers, some cups with sound deadening
material to put inside. Continue reading the procedure. Page 1. Page 2. More important
terms to take note off. Question, Hypothesis, Prediction, Observations, experiment, why
they are necessary for scientific method. Read also about treatment and control group.
Independent and dependent variables. Never forget to take a look at and study diagrams.
#3 is where you actually start doing some experiments. It contains the procedures. Goes
along with TAble 1-1. They've filled in most of it for you. You are actually supposed to
try testing the questions here. Keep following the procedure to here. On to page 3. Next
in 3b you will test that observation, question and hypothesis. It is filled in for you
in the chart. Test this one as well. (Holding breath) Again the chart is filled out for
you for this one. As you do the tests, this page is for filling in and collecting data.
Here is the one for the breath holding test. Make a graph of you data. Ear question data goes here. The
veins and swellings under the skin test goes here. Here is the test where the thermometer will come in handy. Again this
is all written up for you. 3d is the test that requires the thermometer. And there is
even a graph to fill in on this page again. Helps to keep your data. Now that you've practiced
testing four questions, Now it is time to come up with your own. It goes in this area
of the table that has been left blank
for you. It is nice if hypotheses can be "if/then"statements. On page four, this is where you can write
up your own question. Do something that you have the resources at home for. (an idea was
my statement written on D2L about
people's pupils). Write your information down here. You may need to find someone to help
you. Do your test. This area on the bottom of page four is an area you could use for
your data. You do not have to do the statistic question on page 4. Read about Theories and Principles. General idea of first
part of lab was to practice scientific method. Page 6 you can practice more by looking up some scientific articles.
The link to the Riverland Library is on D2L. Check research journals online or in the library. Fill in the information
about it. Last when you are all finished go to page 8 and complete the post lab questions.
Submit in the correct fashion. Preferred is to scan it in and submit to the dropbox. Can
also tear it out and mail it in. If mailing, try to make a copy first for yourself to keep
in case mail gets lost.
