WIFE: Oh hey, hun. Don't forget. My parents are
coming next week and it's your turn to cook.
TOM: Totally! No problem.
TOM: Aw, man!

TOM: Help help help help...okay. How to...cook
for an entire week for your in-laws. How to...have a meal ready before the game. How to...not
be in the dog house. Um...how to...ah...play.
DOMESTIC LEAN GODDESS: Hi Tom!
Looks like you could use some help in the meal planning department. Have you ever heard
of the 5 S's of Quality Improvement? They are Sort, Straighten, Shine, Standardize,
and Sustain.
I believe if you apply these tools, you will see great improvements in your daily life,
including easier, more efficient meal planning, and a happy wife and in-laws. Good luck!
Yours truly, The Domestic Lean Goddess

DOMESTIC LEAN GODDESS: The 5 S's system is a quality improvement
technique developed to standardize a workplace for effectiveness and efficiency, which can
be achieved when you organize the space, and establish orderly flow.

DOMESTIC LEAN GODDESS: Let's go through the 5 phases. Sort, Straighten,
Shine, Standardize, and Sustain -- to see where you can streamline your meal planning
process to make more effective use of your time, and keep your sanity.
Graphic: SORT
DOMESTIC LEAN GODDESS: The first step of the program is: Sort. This
is where you systematically distinguish needed from unneeded items and get rid of what you
don't need. How does your food inventory look?
TOM: Yikes.
DOMESTIC LEAN GODDESS: Well let's get to work.
TOM: Okay. I'll go through my inventory and see
what ingredients I have. The stuff I don't use or is expired, I'll throw that stuff away.
Based on what I have left, I'll create my meal list for the week, and I'll make sure
to focus on using those ingredients that are about to expire first. That'll make it super
easy to figure out what groceries I need and how much of them to buy.
DOMESTIC LEAN GODDESS: That sounds great. Let's move to our next
step: Straighten.
Graphic: STRAIGHTEN
DOMESTIC LEAN GODDESS: The idea here is to keep needed items in the
correct place to allow for easy and immediate access. If you physically lay out all the
tools you need, and measure and prep all the ingredients required for a particular meal
before you start cooking, you can save yourself a lot of time running around the kitchen,
or last minute runs to the grocery store if you don't have enough on an ingredient.
TOM: (flashback) Honey!
TOM: Nice! What else you got?
Graphic: SHINE
DOMESTIC LEAN GODDESS: The third of the 5 S's is: Shine. Keep your
workplace neat and clean. Don't wait until you're done cooking to clean that mountain
of dishes. Cleaning while you cook ensures you will have what you need for the next meal
clean and ready to go when you need it.
DOMESTIC LEAN GODDESS: Cleaning surfaces as you cook can also reduce
your risk of food-borne illnesses.
Graph: (CLEAN AS YOU GO -- Reduce Time Spent in Kitchen
-- 90 min 60 min 30 min)
DOMESTIC LEAN GODDESS: And it also reduces your overall time spent
in the kitchen from prep to clean up. And it certainly reduces the amount of time you
spend looking for things.
TOM: Less time in the kitchen? Seems like a no-brainer
there.
Graphic: STANDARDIZE
DOMESTIC LEAN GODDESS: Exactly. Now you just have to Standardize.
This is where you make Sort, Straighten and Shine habitual: a part of the regular routine.
DOMESTIC LEAN GODDESS: Make sure everyone is aware of the procedures
and be sure there is clear communication.
WIFE: (on phone) Oh, okay, I'll let him know. (to
Tom) They loved it!
DOMESTIC LEAN GODDESS: Looks like things are improving already. But
our final S -- Sustain -- is probably the most important.
Graphic: SUSTAIN
DOMESTIC LEAN GODDESS: Sustain means to maintain and spread established
procedures. You and your team should always be thinking about ways to improve the process.
And have fun with it!
TOM: I'm all over it.
DOMESTIC LEAN GODDESS: Until next time, yours in quality improvement,
the Domestic Lean Goddess.
