pre doctors that are being there you're able to connect instead
unique and dynamic settings you know if you've never been to this conference or
no anything about it
uh... you know it's just
rock-solid you know everyone who's there who's organizing it at the phenomenal he
neither therapists
who organized that they understand what they're pissed need they bring in of the
best
well-rounded group of variety of prisoners that they are able to do and

raffles than than uh...
also there's lots of fun club fifty four we always do that one time during the
conference in the day set it up great were you settle everybody up and back to
you couldn't make it easier so i hope everyone can attend 'cause it's going to
be fun and it's going to be an informative conference
definitely right on back marks a crafted by twenty last year or just simply
phenomenal including ours
have waived a compact i've kept my head on yours with the absolutely packed
you're very popular presenter and this year will be no exception
you're teaching two classes at this year's contract
out one on headache and one on back pain
today we're talking about your class on back pain breaking that cycle
carried what your background or personal experiences with back pain
well you know separately other class ad execs upward with headed for a long time
before i got in the massage when i first got in wisconsin that helped me a lot
back pain ill that does the first
too common things that most to common things that trade in my clinic is neck
pain and and headaches the third most common thing that i treated his back
pain
and most but that was reading like clients for back pain in the
i actually
you know i get them back pain on the top but i mean i finally really had their
back pay more like had to cancel treatments you know none
there i am you know it would sit by always find it fascinating
when i'm in pain i kinda
say attendant go ahead a little bit because it just helps me connect with
what my patients are going through
you know so um...
well the great for me was the finally myself have to apply i already have it
all down pat i want to tell people about headaches acting with a whole new
warning for for me
that i had to go through and now implement what i was always telling my
patients to do when they were the crisis since he doesn't does it really work as
well
you know so
um... i think that when you have these experiences that helps you connect
better with your patient that helps you relate and then communicate
better with them in the future
and uh... had helped you seek treatment and learn more about your body
well i think what you're writing you know what i think it's made me a good
erica factory
is that i've had a lot of pain in my life to him
and i've had to
find what works for me and what didn't work for me and and
really keeping from the client for patient side
instead of voted for the technique i learned in class
not that i did
conducting people to go out and try to find a way to have back pain but you
know i mean
at carolina wichita anyone by
i think when you can bring your own experiences into the treatment round
not only does that help you understand them better batik inouye gives you
better credibility because your patients no
that you have been there
they understand that you get that you've had that same problematic act don't feel
obit shy about telling people that experience the painting or something
similar
who needed them
because i think that make them p_m_ confide in me more truck to be more or
feel like i might know what i'm talking about
more than they were the fact that only i took a class on the didn't exactly
and david do you treat a lot of back pain at your clinic
i like that yeah i actually daily three to think that uh... or do you think that
the other malachite said the third most common thing that i three is back pain
you know for us
here in the united states at least were out you know were i practice
eighty percent of americans are gonna suffer back pain at some point in their
life that you know uh... that we definitely have a very significant over
weight problem going on here in the states
and then uh... and that mainly hits people here in our country between the
ages of thirty and sixty years of age switches
you know uh... in these tough times especially a lot of people don't have
insurance so they're paying cash
so it even that much more important that um... uh...
communicating to them
alma side can help them then at the therapist you can understand boy if
they're carrying in next yr
you know twenty thirty forty fifty sixty pounds you know that that that kind of
working against us and treatment
uh... but how can we get the client understand you know what we're doing and
what the long-term goals are forgetting the amount of pain
so uh... yeah i feel like that in many different ways they do have some good
experience with working with back pain
and i really enjoyed i'm actually going to be showing you some slides of like
uh... that's one woman thirty
you know twisted up in this
see what the house the how we were able to uh... i'd get her lined in in six
citizens six treatments is pretty amazing
um... doesn't happen with everyone but
sometimes uh... and how we do
how we look at the by the house we communicate our findings to our patience
uh... and then of course if the patient's mindset and follow through you
know it's not all locked up for cure their bodies do in the healing
but a lot about is how how we educate uh...
motivate i would say we win some patients come in motivated
summer only coming into their motivated to get out of pain but if you can also
help motivate them to care for themselves better now we've got a whole
different type of uh...
of massage therapy fanned out there running the streets
sunday the discretion and uh...
coming from me directly i'm curious how u
do you when you just mentioned the weight
gene
you talk to their your patients about weight being an issue in their back pain
or how do you protect subject
you know the ground well when someone coming in for it with me for my and
again it depends on whether the buyer mature working in how you're going to
both of you know with me one of the things that are part of their intake
form if they do in this bill that we're going to be says that looking at posture
you know they they had signed a release for me to take digital limits imagery
just like they do if they go to the doctor at the dentist they signed a
release that they can take x_-rays
forevermore arise or whatever other test the doctor deems
you know necessary
does that make sense
yes so so that's why i've gone ahead and i'd ask permission that we can take
postural
assessment that you know it so that the you know to help determine our treatment
plan
so when we did look at the photos and always before i kill the people the
photos i felt was one of everyone thought there was perfect they wouldn't
be here that i wouldn't even have any pain
and made them in and i moved through but basically i'm killing them were their
bones are often their body 'cause we're looking at bony landmarks
like they are the
chrome are their shoulders local there were a chrome equal big killer towards
we might be looking at some point in there
helpless were looking to see if they have a forward head posture
an actor to tell us where they're back is killing her the position of their
pelvis
and sela co in those acts rates and of course are not x_-rayed
in their mind if the next three when i'm showing them a picture of my digital
uh... i might buy loner use your smart phone or you can use your eye had or you
can use your computer hooked up your mom computer monitor up to a camera
however you decide to do it i keep it simple against it with my eye overnight
men
i throw them a skeletal character right on my posture character were the
alignment of the body should be and were they are
and then i'll show them utilizing a modular terror can trigger point charts
which muscles are under stress
and i say to them
now here in the text twenty-two here's the kicker
we need you to
uh... i said uh... so part of this
these alignment the accuser you're in pain so now you can exercise a venue
gain weight you know
and they're like yeah yeah you know if it instantly they're going to bring with
you on that yeah i'm in too much pain i can do
so i told we're gonna have to let you know we you know we got a were what your
pack will it however you can you know
and you can give suggested that you know say you know i'm not train you know i'll
give you whatever recommendation at the last few and treatment what do you
suggest them if they're talking to them about water
scrapbook
i needed to do that
it's really it's that simple basic things that if they can just do some of
that like they know people drink a lot of their calories
by what their consuming if they just started drinking more water they know in
studies people drop like
ten-pound pretty quickly and and a little just
by changing how much calories are drinking for example so i've tried it
talk to them about doing simple exercises like maybe walking if they can
but we can show them maybe ranges the motion that they can start to do
so if you're a natural question was how do i address wait wait comes up multiple
different ways
certificate lee mentioning it anyway at some point and i let him know i'd say
well look at and uh... you know you know it's part of the game play and that's
what's important long-term
and we we start with the muscles right here that some they're going to work on
outside the treatment so we have to make it sound like we're all on board you
know we don't height we don't aboard the white elephant we just mentioned it
wants then move on
degrading and karen that help if i know i i personally have that in my packet
for people say well you know that we are back dot i mean i think someway i think
to myself
do i agree with them in that yes
you have a large part
without allied how do i break that subject i think that there really spot
on suggestions and a very
non-threatening way
to uh...
q approaches and kate to give them ideas about how they can start the process and
their while you're helping them get out of pain
those enid part of that weight gain
it kind of related to treating the congressperson sys tem but i'm sure
they're there are other cut that out there a better creating the back pain
how do you approached reading the content of the sometime see it's all
about education and that is all about killing them all the difference
you we show them the the symptoms of symptom is back pain and then we show
them all the closets we show them posture and we let them know posture is
cause
those boats are only it where they are in space based on where the muscles are
weak at the same muscles on the right side that we have on the left so a
four-fold the one-sided some things to be near to use it to you on you know
from st
come up so that we don't have a balanced in the from one month
of course there could be some structural things going on with bones i mean that
could be a stuff
been ruled out
you know for the most part we're looking at where what the muscles are doing with
the with the body and then of course those muscles what are those muscles
dealing with you're dealing with
uh... gravity they're dealing with the different weights of the body and even
how that weight moves to biomechanics
level when they start to move that way through space and also them in my class
play
of the killer someone like adds he's walking you can just see him wobbling
from right collapsed
well all the muscles in his back images knackered having to
eat you don't deal with that stress she'd there is a little bit of the
movement to right and left as were walking but not this big lockable
so we're getting the biomechanics of the body and again we can't just
you know it's not like we're gonna turn some ranches and then level and
everything's perfect
you know we've got to give the persons some education they've got the light
they've got habits that they developed for a lifetime
twenty thirty forty fifty sixty seventy eighty sometimes identified retooling
ninety three years old
you know so he gave them to give them the knowledge can be given the
information and then the a c work that you know i popped out a little bit never
treatment in the ninety the date that they utilize any event that they come
back and ask me more you know how that goes you know from people
some people or end up in themselves and some people just want to come lay there
and they wanted a fictional
you know so uh... you know i would bet you we can't help everyone but we can do
our best
absolutely
act and that you'll be covering some of the uh...
is that the education portions i have class at the canadian house conference
well yeah i'm a breakdown the education course then i'm also going to break down
until you like you know
if you're if someone comes in with the allyl say cruel pain you know whatever
the
you know seventeen muscles based on travails research that you should make
sure that you double check or if they come in with lumbar pain you know what
are the uh... there again the eight muscle that doctor trip dot would pay
the target and they don't like what order would she had
said based on that research that you might want to tak
those muscles there again it depends how the patient that came about
uh... those trigger points setting up in the muscles and it's not all about for
your points all granted appa it doesn't matter what type of body work do you do
into turning point with terribly disappointed you're gonna run across
these things you know whether you're doing myo bipolar structural work
and they're so prominent in the body that
uh... there again doesn't matter what type of body work you're doing the
education applies to your patient structure
you know i mean there's a map of the body of called the skeletal survey shows
exactly how much of the whole lineup
and that's what the chiropractors do they take an x_-ray and they say this
doesn't line up here's the problem
well we can take a picture and show you what's not wind up in the nats we touch
the muscles here definitely confirms that all so
uh... from a muscular point of view i think a massage therapist in this day in
page had some powerful who
wilson resources available for them now
how many yelling
uh... what our you mention sharepoint but what are some of the causes of back
pain that you'll be covering and learning to treating her class
well within that we're going to make sure that we discussed hostility talked
some about pete we're gonna talk about the of muscular component by will pay
off
some money you know how
the fact is we only have three hours so we're going to discuss
uh... how the nerves can be involved in their again we've all had those patients
that come in where they can barely walk in there kind of like a really able to
crawl on the table and you're thinking why did you come to me today you should
be at my place
right here scared to even touched down you know what i'm saying
then you found out that maybe they've taken some pain medication in your leg i
when i got to be really careful to make a good weekend and put
and
during that whole process you know like and that they're telling you all gotten
bolting bit you know what are some good quick cuts that you can do to rule it
out or if you're doing a parents were quite
you know a lot of the majority of my business over the years has come from
appeal emergency rooms in the area and it so i see a lot of very few stopped
and up sometimes it's and currents were
and with that insurance work sometimes people are not motivated to get well so
you've got uh... you know tech income of those have the are they being totally
apart without them you know which ones are your my favorites and other way
by the way you have a lot of stuff
so uh... test to determine who submit linger and and he was relieved working
on getting better
and then what is the self care that you can provide for them a lot and that same
self here is what you need to be doing for yourself so
you know i didn't hear a lot of what i do for myself on a daily basis
just to help maintain the of my practice so that on physically able to go in
there and do the treatment cuz
at targeting therapists that hard work i don't care what to do with stuff work
other definitely very critical and mentally challenging came but it's
really obvious david that you enjoyed enjoy what you can answer anything in
particular that you
enjoy about treating people who have back pain
i think uh... the biggest thing that i enjoy you about
um...
people who have over whether it
back pain or any type of pain
it's just going through the whole investigation process and asking why you
simpson why do they have been stage
and using these deductive reasoning tha
determine your next rational step you know because the body
the the body is a very magical thing but there are you know it's like when you
understand gravity when you understand certain basic concepts and the laws of
the universe or how the body work so i'm not saying i understand the body i'm not
trying to be anyone's guru here by any means
but you know sometimes when you be you know over time sometime proven on the
panel things we know
and when we applied them it can be very powerful so
i do love going through that process
sub process
seeing educating
understanding my client and that that's something also that where you know all
pap on in class again we only have three hours but
you know as your client a visual an auditory or ten a static learner like
for example
or or when you're describing it to them they go you know i just don't hear what
you're saying do you know that telling do their part a torrent or if they're
saying you know i just can't picture that in my mind then all right now i
need to give them he'd be cool
explanation of what we're talking about like if they say i can't i just can't
see that
i know i need to pull out and anatomical model and show it to them
i need to show them a visual on the trigger point charter of visual people
that they're talking to me and they're saying now i want to be here in the on
this
or they're talking about like
they're using
things then i know that there are are victoria learner and i need to talk to
them auditory no everywhere you know we all are on the tory visual summer people
are more kind of static
you know those are the people that when you say word at your back toward the
goal on the point on you
you know that kind of an hour they always want to touch you were there
taking themselves okay there kennard like i've had a woman the other day very
tight acutely so i knew okay i'm a touch under that you know it's anesthetic with
her to the first few
and then we take those and you can actually layer them like real life
through their strongest
anesthetic lian secondly there vidual an auditory their weekends so
and then sometimes you didn't get that cleary punitive in movie you know but
there again that
it's just experience and it's understanding and it's enjoying the
process and it's just a process of learning like
today you give a massage it's much better than the one you first until we
dated
you know so we got better all the time but part of it is the passengers you
know i a book by just love helping people
you know i really do enjoy it
definitely share dive
have witnessed that passion specially in terms of educating people in our
industry
uh... i'm really glad that you shared idea that this is a process and
account laid out that it's not just about the hands-on work it's about the
apartment
i look at it like solving a puzzle
and people company whether retarded bank
simple i have to figure out and based on the quake that they give me from
thirteen of the pain of the companies that they're having and her pastor and
all of the things that you've mentioned
then i can helped them to figure out help myself to figure out where it's
coming from what might that factional in order to help them
sometimes run into therapists that don't get that part
five-pound i think it's great that you mentioned that and i know that you
provide a lot of talk to help their parts with that
uh... without will make sure they get your website information and annette
before we do that i want to ask you if you're any
deeper they'd bite that you have for uh... people who were interested in
learning to work with it could have back pain or in taking that there are one of
your other classes
well there again understanding the mechanics of the bar understanding the
anatomy of a buddy i think is number one no matter what type of bodywork
european and you need us hand what it is you're working on and how it works and
how we can actually howard on kids in there again that's what learning process
that i am i felt insulted that i'm always going through though anything you
can do to learn more about the body
the it's formats anatomy its function it's physiology
i think it's critical
i think it's also part of that process is applying that knowledge to yourself
so it is important that you're taking good care of your body
that uh... that you're doing the things like when you're back hurts
you need to go to the freezer in poland i stepped out
or you need to
do the stretching that you tell a client who then we'll start to see god that's
not so easy for them to do that you know maybe
all i see if they get uh... in these positions that's much he so i'd have to
teach them what to do if they get into these prices states and how they think
and how the breed i mean they need to learn how to strengthen father you know
i did the pen you gotta stay within your scope of practice but i think
there again is understanding that it's more than just what
there again were not killing them their killing themselves
we are this
silicate urs i think even our manual therapy you know the body of system
euless response
you've you've touched it with something hot upholds itself away you you cut it
it will stop the bleeding
same thing we manually go in and treated and tried influence that we get a ball
rolling and we start it
and we need to get that ball rolling in all these other areas of their life and
to really do it effectively
we have to implemented in our own life so you know sometimes i get that's why
we got in the body work was
so we could help ourselves that's what i see that's being about the coolest
perfection it if you really apply at all it's like you really get to take care
yourself
while you're teaching other people how to do it because to me that
because the coolest perfection going so
i'm very grateful to be part of it
meek and i i agree with your hundred first-round everything you've had and
i really want encourage everyone listening here on come today the class
