Seems to me leadership transcends the sectors. It's popular at some point to talk about nonprofit
leaders, for-profit, government leaders. I think leadership is leadership. It seems to
me that leadership basically brings three qualities together. The first is that leaders
have a vision they know where the organization should go, and inherently they have enough
intelligence to go around the corner. After vision leaders need to have tenacity. They
need to have gumption. They need to have what we are talking a lot about now-grit. There
is a video by Angela Duckworth, she talks about grit as the determining factor. She
looks at as what I would call long-term tenacity. It seems to me leaders don't shy away from
making hard decisions. The third thing in any organization is leaders have to be sensitive
to people. They have to know who the people are that looking for them. What they can do
to help them grow. They also have to know who are the customers for-profit or nonprofit.
What are people's needs? So, leaders need to be very good listeners. One of the challenges
of leadership in any organization is making sure you know what people are thinking and
you don't find yourself isolated physically or metaphorically.
