Hi I'm John Parry registered osteopath and acupuncturist
practicing at Marlborough House. Today I'll be discussing how acupuncture
and osteopathy
can help lower back pain. This is a very common condition
seventy to eighty five percent of people with experience back pain and some point
in their life in most cases it is not serious
and we often refer to it as non-specific lower back pain. This is defined as back
pain
that had lasted longer than six weeks and less than 12 months
It can be extremely debilitating and may present with pain
stiffness or refer pain to other structures such as spinal discs
facets ligaments muscles or any connected tissues
two ships following authority case history orthopedic tests will be carried
out, to assist in supporting our working diagnosis
Alongside this, a postural assessment will also be carried out to
identified any by mechanical factors
which may be also contributing to your pain. Following
the examination the working diagnosis will be explained
to you in great detail from here we can work out
whether treatments in the form of osteopathy or acupuncture
will be helpful or not. Osteopathic treatment
will involve a wide variety of treatment modalities
these can range from mobilization manipulation
soft tissue techniques to acupuncture alongside this
exercise advice may also be given. Osteopathy
and acupuncture are both recommend treatment modalities by
NICE guidelines as from 2009 NICE guidelines
recommends both acupuncture and manual therapy such as osteopathy
for the treatment of non-specific lower back pain if you're suffering with lower
