What is academic torrents?
Academic Torrents is an index for scientific data, a redundant and high speed network,
and the future of reproducibility and open access
As an index for scientific data we provide a
portal
to show every entity in the system such as the entire English wikipedia. Each entity
is stored with bibtex to allow for a robust description.
Collections provide a grouping of entities as curated by a user. Here we see a collection
of UCI machine learning datasets. We provide the ability to download entire collections
at once.
We also provide the ability to search the index. Here we see entities relating to "mars"
such as UPC, THEMIS, and MOLA data. Note there is no limit on the size of datasets in this
system.
We are also a redundant and high speed network.
Redundancy is obtained using the bittorrent protocol. Because files are cryptographically
verified by the client, anyone can volunteer their servers without security concerns. This
provides high availability fault tolerance. Universities, research groups, and anyone
else can selectively mirror the content that they decide is important
Downloading a file also acts to mirror it which allows the system to deal with scale
organically. as more people download the faster download speeds become
As the future of reproducibility and open access
we make large datasets easy to share. data can travel from source to destination with
or without replication on intermediate servers. By providing faster downloads on a fault tolerant
network that is supported by researchers there is no barrier to exchange data. By providing
a searchable index and curated collections we make this data easier to find.
We hope beyond datasets this system will become the future of libraries storing digital papers
as they would store books. With fault tolerance built in and without depending on external
services we believe it is the perfect system for the future of digital libraries
