Every week I will be tackling a massive talking point regarding the galaxy far, far away.
And first up is the age-old question:
in which order should a newcomer to the Star Wars saga watch the films.
Or better yet, in which order should you show your children;
in which order would I show my children them.
If I did have children in the future, and I were to show them the Star Wars movies,
surely it would be I, II, III, IV, V, VI - right?
Surely there's a numerical order for a reason, right?
Well, this probably won't come as much of a shock -
and it's not that I hate the prequels, or anything like that -
I would just personally show them Episodes IV, V and VI, and then Episodes I, II and III.
The main reason for this is that I think everyone deserves the opportunity to find out...
...the most iconic plot twist in all of cinema;
The biggest reveal in Star Wars history, and that is - of course - Darth Vader being the father of Luke Skywalker.
There are plenty of YouTube videos out there of people seeing this for the first time and just losing their mind!
I remember I lost my mind when I realised this.
But imagine if you watched the prequels first, and then you watched Episodes IV, V and VI -
you'll think - well, obviously Anakin's the father.
That was revealed in Episode III. What's the big deal?!
So I think it ruins it a bit. I also think, in a way - if you show them the prequels first -
they won't appreciate the original trilogy more. I mean, spoilers aside,
people being *** aside -Imagine that, a little kid traumatised, thinking:
so it's cool to kiss your sister? Alright, I'll keep that in mind.
No, we don't want to scar our children like that.
Aside from that, however, I think if - especially kids watched the prequels before the original trilogy,
they'll think: "Wow, this Darth Vader - Obi-Wan Kenobi fight is awful!"
"The special effects suck!" You know what I mean?
You're going from one extreme to another.
You've got CGI for days, you've got epic lightsaber fights,
going up against what were groundbreaking special effects at the time - but of course,
they can't hold up with modern day cinema.
So your kid especially is gonna think: "This lightsaber fight sucks!"
"These effects suck! What is the big deal with this?!"
So, show them the original trilogy first.
They will be blown away as we all were when we first watched them.
Again, I would go Episodes IV, V, VI, I, II, III.
And then I think the next logical step there when it comes in with all these anthology movies and...
...all these -This new trilogy of movies...
-Disney are really complicating things, aren't they?
But, yeah - I would probably choose to go Rogue One after they watch Episode III,
because they can watch it and be like: "Ah, right - that's how Episode IV begins. Oh, that's epic!"
"Darth Vader, yeah!"
And, then I guess the new trilogy?
I have no idea where the Han Solo movie or the proposed Obi-Wan Kenobi movie fits in there.
But do let me know. I'd love to hear what your opinion is of this:
in what order do you think newcomers to the series should watch the Star Wars movies?
