COMM: This incredible footage looks like it
was shot on a strange alien world, but it's actually a simple tomato plant, magnified
thousands of times.
What is this bug-eyed beast? It is in fact
a glass-winged butterfly. And who do these fearsome looking jaws belong to? Nothing more
frightening than a honey bee.
Using high-powered microscopes and computer
software, german photographer Stefan Diller has been able to create these stunning high-defenition
films called Nanoflights.
Each fascinating clip reveals everyday plants
and insects in stunning detail.
Mr Diller spent three years developing the
technology and perfecting the process at his laboratory in Wuerzburg.
His films are made up of thousands of different
images, taking using a scanning electron microscope. Special software has been written to interpolate
smooth movements, focus and color parameters, taking hours to complete the process.
Mr Diller says his hard work has been worthwhile.
Scientists can soon use this type of filming to illustrate their research. And Mr Diller
also hopes his work would appeal to people outside scientific circles, opening our eyes
to the incredible microscopic world around us.
