Okay we are back. Of course
with every new year comes new year's resolutions. Of course
for me and lotsa people it's uh starting a diet but before you start that diet
I want you to listen to Molly McGowan and Barb Fortier
um with the Girl Scouts and they're gonna tell you a little bit about cookie creations.
So, girls, you wanna come out here and tell me about it
OK.
I'm Barb Fortier, I'm the COO of the Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts and
one of my areas of responsibility is the cookie sale.
The Girl Scout cookie sale is the largest program that we offer girls to
participate in.
Our sale started on December 13 and will run
through March 4th. Fun facts about cookies: there are eight types of cookies
that sell for four dollars a package.
We have our Thin Mints, Caramel Delites, a couple of peanut butter varieties,
Shortbreads, Thanks-a-lot, Lemonades and our new cookie this year
is a Cranberry Citrus Crisp. In addition we are fortunate to have been included
in a pilot program with our baker
for a gluten-free chocolate chip shortbread cookie--
I have a sample here. Last year the Girl Scouts in eastern Massachusetts sold
2.5 million boxes of cookies.
The proceeds are used by the girls to go to summer camp--summer camp registration
started last week--
uh they attend GSEM programs, they travel around the world
and they go on local fun trips with their troops. The cookie sale provides
valuable leadership lessons and training on financial literacy,
teaching girls five essential skills: goal-setting,
decision-making, money management, people skills,
and business ethics. In addition they learn the importance of giving back to their
community through our Cookies for a Cause program.
Molly McGowan, an Ambassador Girl Scout, is here with me today
and she can share her learning experiences as a result of participating
in the sale. Molly?
So Girl Scouts has taught me financial literacy and how to manage money and
working with other people while selling cookies, and the importance
of keeping track of the money and what
money can do for you and how you earn it so what the Girl Scout cookie sale has
allowed me
to go forth and travel to Quebec with the Girl Scout Travel Group. In the
summer we'll also be traveling to Chicago,
and we're able to do this through the cookie sales because
the money that we earn through selling cookies give us the ability to travel
in addition it teaches the younger girls how to interact with people, how to speak
to elders,
and appropriate street-smart social skills
and a what a cookie can do. [Barb] Thanks Molly
If cookies are not part of your diet you can purchase a box
to send to a soldier overseas GSEM donated
thirty thousand boxes to the troops last year and our goal is to top that this year.
We have two of our biggest selling weekends coming up:
Super Bowl Sunday on February 2nd and National Cookie Sales Weekend on
February 7th and 8th,
so be on the lookout for girls selling in your area. They make great snacks for
Super Bowl
or great gifts for Valentine's Day. To find out where you can buy Girl Scout
cookies in your area,
visit www.herGirlScouts.org
click on the cookie locator button and put in your ZIP code
and you'll find the sale that's closest to you. Another really fun way to enjoy
cookies is to attend our Cookie Creations event.
It's a contest featuring 14 local chefs who will use their culinary skills
to create original creations using one of our cookies.
The date is Thursday, February 6, 2014
at 6 p.m. at the Royal Sonesta Hotel in Cambridge.
Tickets are $35 dollars each or two for $60.
This is an adult fundraiser supporting leadership programs for Girl Scouts
and will feature a silent auction. It's a really fun event.
It provides wonderful networking opportunities as well as a chance to
enjoy the chef's creations.
I hope to see you there. Thank you for all you do to support the Girl Scouts
in Waltham.
