There are many things you can add to any salad to make it more interesting.
I'm going to make some pesto, by using some of this basil.
If you're behind on planting herbs this year...
...Don't worry, there's an easy way to catch up without planting a single seed.
All you need is one of these. They're easy to find in any supermarket.
Many basil seeds have been planted in this pot...
...But they won't live long like this.
If you want to make your money go a little further...
...All you need to do is separate them, and plant them individually.
They'll grow into a bush which will last you months.
To give the plant the best possible chance, they need to be cut in half.
Don't worry, this won't be wasted - I'll use it for the pesto a bit later!
The reason I've cut the plant in half is because the roots have been damaged.
If there's not enough roots to pump water to the plant, it will wilt.
Therefore, we need some balance. By cutting off the top of the plant, it will grow stronger.
The most common type of basil is the sweet basil. But there are a lot of different types.
Like the basil from Thailand, the genovese from Italy...
...Cinnamon basil and one called Purple Ruffles!
Here's a tip - keep picking the leaves to stimulate growth.
And remember to water them frequently.
I'm hungry after that!
These leftover basil leaves will be perfect for making pesto.
I better wash them first!
To make pesto you need to crush the leaves into small pieces...
...Before adding some garlic, pine nuts and olive oil.
I'm sure this will be great with pasta!
Next, how about some ingredients for the salad?
I have some lettuce and salad onions.
And, of course, some of this porchulaca.
I'm looking forward to trying these!
Despite the rain, here you have a fresh and healthy meal...
...What could be better than this?!
