Sustainability is a very difficult word.
Hard not for being a new word
but I think it is because sustainability
is something very complex.
NATIONAL COORDINATOR OF "LIMPA BRASIL"
AWARD "FAZ DIFERENA" THE GLOBO
PRESIDENT OF THE ASSOCIATION OF "CATADORES DO ATERRO
METROPOLITANO" OF JARDIM GRAMACHO ACAMJ
BRAZILIAN REPRESENTATIVE THAT WILL CARRY THE OLYMPIC TORCH
IN THE LONDON OLYMPICS
MEMBER OF THE NATIONAL COMMISSION OF THE NATIONAL MOVEMENT
OF COLLECTORS OF RECYCLABLE MATERIALS
Lately people use the
sustainability for everything.
I define sustainability that at least she has to
she has to meet at least three pillars
that I think it's important which is the economic
social issues and the environmental issue.
If I were to teach a child, I think
I would teach this: to separate their waste in their home
which is recycled of which is not
to plant a tree to preserve a tree
to care for the animals I think this is
greater understanding that a child may have
of what is sustainability.
And these actions, which many people can
find small are actions of good citizenship
which ends up creating a better citizen
that will think when he has a greater social inclusion
of these people, in a more just society.
But I think that for a child
the fundamental is for you to teach her to preserve
the environment and consequently
the human life and the life fauna and flora.
For Brazil to be sustainable we had at least
at least begin to address a small issue
which is today the waste in Brazil and the world
it is a big problem and, when dealing with
Brazil, and then the +20 will happen here
I think that Brazil had to start to think
in the treatment of waste
and its complexity ... that is the social and
environmental issues that surrounds the waste in Brazil nowadays.
So Brazil wants to discuss the mitigation of greenhouse gases
where we still throw 95% of our waste
in open dumps. How to discuss mitigation
of greenhouse gases where you have an
open dump, throwing CO2 and Methane 24 hours in the atmosphere?
Where people do not separate the fate of
their waste properly?
How you reach to a Germany
France, or to any overdeveloped country
where Recycling is a reality
like Spain and other countries in Europe
And tell them: look Germany, France, Spain,
among other countries, you need to decrease your
quantity of greenhouse effect gases.
And of course if I'm one of these countries I would respond:
Brazil, you need to start to treat your waste
which does not happen yet. So I think
Brazil has to target small and hit big.
I think it's a great opportunity to discuss
the national waste policy and social inclusion
of scavengers within this policy
the reverse logistics the treatment of
esidues inside a
integrated management, where society, the public
and private power have their obligations ratified
and very explicit obligations of what
each has to do within its role
I think this is Brazil's role, to discuss what
we have less discussed nowadays
which is the waste problem.
I think that the commoc citizen, for him as well
it is not hard, no. Like I said, I gave a simple hint.
The fact that you separate your residue fro what
is recyclableand what is not recyclable in your house
you will be generating work and income
for a historically excluded population
which is the population of ... that are millions of collectors
of recyclable materials
you will be saving
the natural resources though recycling these
residues that are potentially recyclable.
So, in other words, you are helping the environment.
Look how much you've done:
you've done the social that is to help collectors
you saved natural resources, you helped
the environment and economically
you will be transforming into work
income and citizenship, not only for the collectors but also ...
throughout the recycling production chain .
Then you reached the Three goals: social
environmental and economic.
So I think that the fact of people just separating
their residue within their home
practicing the selective collection and recycling
is already helping a lot.
Among other things you save energy
decreasing the amount of lights on
choosing the appliance that use the minimum
electric energy possible.
I think today there is a range of things
small actions that together
become big.
What I feel from people is that they come to speak:
Ah, an aluminum or a plastic bottle
what difference does that make? It makes a lot.
Because in the world we are 7 billion people.
If everyone decides to throw away one can
and one bottle there will be 7 billion cans
7 billion bottles they are 7 billion bottles
of any other type of plastic.
So people sometimes think that a small
attitude doesn't make a difference but it does.
I think this it is the hint I give to people
it is a small gesture but when we add
the amount of people which take this approach
it becomes a very big attitude. 255:255:255:255 255:255:255:255 *END PART 1*
