I think one of the values of telling your stories is that
it helps you to remember things that you might have forgotten about
and perhaps never appreciated, at the time
but it comes back to you - oh yes that was interesting,
or its had an effect on my life that I hadn't realised
I remember when my father had died, I remembered things at the time that I would dismiss
oh thats what he says, you know the kind of thing
but I can still now say, yes, he always used to say, Keep an open mind
So I think theres a value in kind of; it enriches the whole memory
it enriches your whole life, as they say, you can have the experience, but miss the meaning
it adds meaning to your experience,
it deepens the experience by reflecting on it
Well it widens their horizons hopefully; lifes not always as it is at the moment
and to appreciate what they've come from too
and what they have today, is built on what went before
its a whole enriching experience, I think more than you can learn about
other people, other countries, other civilisations
Well as a History teacher, it would be a very valuable resource
teaching them about the Japanese invasion of Burma
here's a personal story from someone who experienced it
