JERE: A COMMUNITY IS RALLYING
AROUND A SICK GIRL.
A YORK COUNTY FAMILY IS DEALING
WITH A SERIOUS ILLNESS, A
TEENAGE DAUGHTER WITH
DEBILITATING BONE CANCER AND
THEY HAVE TREMENDOUS SUPPORT
CARRYING THEM THROUGH A
DIFFICULT TIME.
IT HAS BEEN TWO YEARS SINCE HOPE
MALDONADO WAS DIAGNOSED WITH
CANCER.
SHE SPENT MUCH OF HER TIME IN
THE HOSPITAL OR RESTING AT HOME.
IT'S NOT LIKE IT IS EASY, BUT
YOU MAKE THE BEST OF IT.
JERE: OUR FAMILY HAS BECOME
CLOSER OVER THE ORDEAL, AND THEY
HAVE DONE EVERYTHING THEY CAN TO
MAKE SURE HOPE STILL MARKS
MILESTONES IN HER LIFE.
SHE RECENTLY WENT TO HER
SCHOOL'S HOMECOMING DANCE WITH A
GROUP OF FRIENDS.
I HAD TO GET MY NAILS DONE.
SHE WAS SO JUST UP AND
BEAUTIFUL -- SO DRESSED UP AND
BEAUTIFUL.
IT MADE ME PROUD.
JERE: THERE WERE ALSO SURPRISES,
LIKE WHEN HER BROTHERS FOOTBALL
TEAM -- FOR BROTHER'S FOOTBALL
TEAM AIMED HER CLEAN.
A BIG SURPRISE FROM HER FATHER'S
COWORKERS, THEY BROUGHT LUNCH.
THEY SAID HAVE ANOTHER SLICE
OF PIZZA AND I SAID I'M GOOD,
AND THEN THEY SAID NO, THERE IS
ALL THIS MONEY IN THEIR.
JERE: IT WAS ABOUT
$6,000, ALL
PART OF SUPPORT THAT IS MEANT SO
MUCH TO HOPE AND HER FAMILY.
I LOOK ON THE POSITIVE SIDE.
TRY TO HAVE FAITH IN MYSELF.
JERE: A STRONG GIRL.
SHE SAYS SHE MISSES GOING TO
SCHOOL AND SEEING HER FRIENDS
AND THAT IS WHY THE HOMECOMING
DANCE WAS SO IMPORTANT TO HER.
LORI: IT SEEM LIKE SHE WAS
FEELING GOOD IN THAT STORY -- IT
SEEMED LIKE SHE WAS FEELING GOOD
IN THAT STORY.
JERE: YOU HAVE TO GIVE HER
CREDIT FOR THAT.
