He released his 21st studio album, "Earthling,"
where he managed to switch styles
and change moods smoothly.
It featured the overwhelming "Dead Man Walking,"
a song that reflects on the inevitability of death
and getting older.
It also contained the avant-garde
drum-and-bass spectacular "Little Wonder,"
which reached the top 20 in the U.K.
Throughout the year, he set off
on a high-budget, visually-spectacular tour
with Nine Inch Nails.
-He said he's just finished a new album
that he doesn't expect it to sell well,
and if we tour together, he expects his band
will probably get blown off the stage
because of what he's trying to do,
but that's not...
It doesn't matter, you know.
It's about "I have to do this."
-♪ It's the kind of living
-In January 1997,
he celebrated his 50th birthday in style
with an all-star performance
at New York Madison Square Garden.
It was one of his most memorable shows,
as he was joined onstage
by the Foo Fighters, Billy Corgan,
and Lou Reed in an electrifying live set.
And then the next day, we went down to Greenwich Village
to take pictures in an English tea shop,
but it didn't really work in there at first session.
And so I -- Even though it was a very cold day,
I got him outside on the street.
He was wearing a really lovely black overcoat,
and there was a black wall,
and his hair was flame red at the time.
And so the only color in the shot
is the flame-red hair,
and I, you know, got him holding a mug of tea
with a Union flag on it.
And it made a great picture for us.
You know -- Englishman in New York.
