Hi!
Today we are going to read a famous fable about the Grasshopper and the Ant.
Are you ready?
Then listen carefully...
Once upon a time, on a warm summer day, a grasshopper was singing happily in a grassy meadow.
"La-la-la..."
Then, he happened to notice a group of ants walking by.
"Hello, ants! Why are you working so hard when the weather is so nice?" asked the grasshopper.
One of the ants replied, "Hello, grasshopper! We are storing food for the winter."
"Why are you doing that?" asked the grasshopper. "There's still plenty of food around here."
"There may be plenty of food now, because it's summer," the ant said.
"But when winter comes, there will not be any food left to eat.
You should save some food too or you might be in trouble later."
"Ha-ha-ha!" laughed the grasshopper when he heard this.
Then, he said, "Summer has just begun. I'll worry about winter when it arrives."
And with that, he started singing his song again. "La-la-la..."
The grasshopper continued singing and lazing around
as the ants continued to walk by him, working hard to collect food.
Soon, autumn arrived, but the grasshopper continued to sing merrily as the ants kept working hard.
Not long after that, autumn ended and it became winter in the meadow.
The grasshopper stopped singing and started looking for food, but he wasn't able to find a single crumb.
"Ah, I'm starving," he said to himself. "This isn't good.
I need to find something to eat, but where should I go?"
Then, he remembered the ants who had been saving up food throughout the summer and autumn.
"Ah, yes! The ants must have lots of food. I'll go ask them for some food!"
The grasshopper rushed over to the ants' house and knocked on the door. "Knock, knock, knock!"
One of the ants answered the door.
"Grasshopper! What are you doing here?"
"I have nothing to eat. I saw you saving up food before, so could you give me some of your food?"
"I'm sorry," the ant replied, "But we only have enough food for us ants.
There is nothing for you. You really should have stocked up on extra food during the summer, like I told you."
With that, the ant closed the door and the grasshopper was left alone.
He was very cold.
He was shivering and also very hungry.
Now, he really regretted not listening to the ant and singing and playing all the time.
The moral of the story is: there is a time to work and a time to play.
