I had an infection in my knee and I couldn't walk… actually, my legs would collapse under
me.
He was admitted to shore-term acute care hospital where he had his surgery and his plan was
established for treatment.
I had been immobile for so long that I didn't know what my future looked like.
With the same care plan, with the same providers, care providers, he came to Kindred.
It was selected for me by my family because I had never heard about Kindred, but as I
got to learn about Kindred it was more and more like a home. I was treated like I was
at home.
When we first started I remember he was a little down about his situation but as we
worked with him he really was an enjoyable person to work with. He was motivated. He
really wanted to get back home.
I really wanted to get better even though I had all the pain. I overrode that pain feeling
to get better, to feel better.
We're not just treating them because of their bad knee or their weak shoulder. We're treating
them overall as a whole person and looking at them and how we can really help them.
Everyday I had hope. Everyday, I had help and hope from everybody in the staff.
Once that phase was completed successful and the infection was nearly eradicated he was
moved to a lower level of care, what is called a sub-acute unit at Kindred, literally going
from the first floor to the second floor where he could continue to work with the same physical
therapists and complete his rehabilitation process.
Going upstairs was great. I did more physical training. Great staff, caring staff, wonderful
staff, you know, it made my life better.
Since we were already working with him we knew what was his status was and he was familiar
with the gym, with the therapists. It was easy for him to rehabilitate.
My growth there was good… from being immobile and full of pain, to where I was excited to
be alive again.
His care was provided in a continuum without any interruption. He recovered very well,
his infection was completely eradicated, completely treated. He had a successful rehabilitation
process and he's home.
It's fulfilling to be coming from where I was to where I am today. You go where you
belong and I belonged at Kindred.
