We know that there is a shortage of scientists around the world. But more importantly, we
need to encourage our children, our future citizens, to use science as a way to make
better decisions for a sustainable future. As a way of questioning and reasoning, science
opens our eyes to the beauty of the world around us, our possible fate as a species,
and suggests ways we can ensure our survival, maybe even making new homes among the stars.
As a teacher, you can play an important part in this. Children who have their interest
in science nurtured from a young age are then more likely to take the subject as teenagers
at secondary school and go on to see science as a future career. A good understanding of
science gives teachers an awareness of what might be a suitable scientific investigation
for the classroom, as well as helping them understand some of the health and safety issues
that arise in science teaching. The Open Polytechnic primary science teaching qualifications are
designed to help teachers already in the classroom learn more about science, discover how to
teach science in a fun and hands-on way, and be confident to champion science education
in their community.
