Bangladesh landslide leaves at least 17 dead. Three days of heavy rains unleashed a large
landslide on Friday, July 1 in an area of the port city of Chittagong. At least seven
shanties were buried as even the retaining wall collapsed. A rescue team of army and
brigade officers by Saturday found 17 who had perished, mostly women and children. The
disaster reportedly struck just hours after Mayor Mohammad Monjur Alam had visited residents
of the slum areas and urged them to take shelter at a nearby school as he warned of landslide
risks.
Conveying her sorrowful prayers and love, Supreme Master Ching Hai requested that our
Association members please check with city officials to see if any assistance is needed,
and to also go if possible to comfort the afflicted, saying that emergency funds are
available as required.
Our gratefulness for the efforts of the Bangladeshi military and other personnel, as well as for
Supreme Master Ching Hai’s heartfelt concern. We join in sympathy for the precious lives
lost and pray for the cessation of such tragedies through our adoption of kinder, eco-stabilizing
ways
