Fairfield Little League Stars In Action Today; Game 1 Vs. New Jersey At 3 p. m.
As they rode here together on a charter bus from Bristol Sunday, the young ballplayers from Fairfield American Little League and Holbrook Little League of Jackson, N.J. — opponents today (3 p.m., ESPN) in the first game in the U.S.
bracket at the Little League World Series — hardly acted like future rivals.
It probably took an hour into it, maybe 45 minutes into the ride and I turn around and theres a football being thrown between New Jersey and Connecticut, Fairfield American manager Mike Randazzo said Wednesday night.
The boys were talking about social media stuff and whos got more likes and whats your Instagram account and this and that. They acted how kids would act..
Pressure? What pressure? Fairfield Americans decade of domination — six state titles, seven District II crowns and three New England championships, culminating in an unprecedented third trip to Williamsport since 2010 — has them prepared better than most.
And they are fresh, having advanced here in the minimum three games at the New England regionals, their 10-0 win over South Portland, Maine, in the title game raising their postseason record to 18-0.
Likewise, New Jersey, which won the right to be the home team Thursday via coin toss, steamrolled the competition in the Mid-Atlantic regional, also held at the Giamatti Complex in Bristol last week.
And while they emerged from different tournaments, scouting was inevitable.
Fairfield American departed for the Little League World Series on Sunday morning, Aug. 13. We knew they were one of the better teams in the [Mid-Atlantic regional], Randazzo said. So just by chance youre over there watching games.
As the tournament went on youre sort of focused on a few teams, and New Jersey was definitely one of them.. 1 pitcher, Ethan Righter, who won the clincher in Bristol, will get the ball today in Lamade Stadium.
The team practiced Wednesday but has also taken part in a host of off-field activities, mingling with Little Leaguers from around the world.
Google translator is running rampant here, Randazzo said. They like they same things. Its really been incredible to watch these boys mix it up with kids from Korea and kids from Japan and all over the world..
