Republican Presidential Candidate Mitt Romney is set to address the hot button topic of
immigration at a speech in Los Angeles Monday. Here’s CNN with a preview of what we can
expect.
“He'll pledge to reform the nation's broken immigration system when he addresses the Hispanic
Chamber of Commerce today. (FLASH)...Romney will also say over 2 million more Hispanics
are living in poverty today than the day President Obama took office.”
In the speech transcript released to the media, Romney also says that we “will never achieve
a legal immigration system that is fair and efficient if we do not first get control of
our borders. I believe we can all agree that what we need are fair and enforceable immigration
laws that will stem the flow of illegal immigration, while strengthening legal immigration."
So could the Hispanic vote clinch the election for Obama or Romney? Both have tapped into
Hispanic figureheads, Obama with San Antonio mayor Julian Castro and Romney with Florida
Senator Marco Rubio. But WRC says one side appears to have the edge, at least for now.
“In a recent poll among registered Hispanic voters, the President leads Romney by more
than 30 points.”
Romney’s trip to the golden state could prove to be an opportunity for a foreign policy
rebound. Fox Business writes...
“After a tough week in which he fell behind Obama in the polls, Romney will couple his
immigration promises with a commitment to get a handle on America's problem of rising
national debt and massive budget deficits.”
Hispanic voters turned out in record numbers in 2008 and are set to play a crucial role
in this year’s presidential election- especially in swing states like Colorado, Nevada, Florida,
and Virginia.
