Hi, I'm Dr. Robert Moore at Awesome Chiropractic. I want to talk with you today about your fight
or flight nervous system called your sympathetic nervous system and what I like to call your
relax and rebuild nervous system called the parasympathetic nervous system. The blue nerves
and the red nerves.
If you look at these charts here, the red and blue nerves goes to the same organs -- the
heart, the lungs, the digestive system, the kidney, the liver. The body has a need to
survive which is the blue nerves. Which I like to call the "survival nerves". The red
nerves I like to call the "thrival nerves", your parasympathetic nervous system.
If there was a tiger chasing you right now, you'd be oh there's a tiger in the room, I
need to run away. You don't need to heal, have a good immune system, you don't need
to smile, you don't need to learn Einstein's theory of relativity. However, your heart
beats fast, you have high cholesterol, you're under stress, you have high lipids in your
blood.
There's a lot of things going on -- your digestive systems shuts down, the bronchial tubes in
your lungs open up so you get more oxygenated blood to your arms and your legs and your
brain so you can run away from the tiger. You get high cholesterol so if the tiger bites
you, you don't bleed to death; and you get an adrenaline high.
If you've worked all day and you notice after 8 hours and you're done working, and now you
have to go to the bathroom and you're hungry where you weren't before. That's because the
sympathetic nervous system shuts down your digestive system.
When you get a chance to rest, the parasympathetic nerves, the red nerves, or the thrival nerves
kick in and say "hey, you need something to eat!; it's time to go to the bathroom." It's
time to heal and regenerate.
These are the nerves in charge of lowering the cholesterol, closing down the bronchial
tubes, and resting/regenerating your body and making you heal and feel better.
There's a time to run and be active and there's a time to rest and heal. "Let's run away from
the tiger". The tiger is now gone, now we can restore our energy and build our body
up.
This applies to chiropractic by balancing out these 2 systems. If someone has a messed
up neck and sacrum, I guarantee they are not healing very well. If their mid back is all
torqued, twisted, and slumped over, they are not healing well either. They are too active.
Sometimes people will notice they are tired all day but can't sleep at night. That's an
imbalance between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system. Asthmatics need these guys
to work to open up the bronchial tubes -- the problem is the bronchial tubes don't know
if they're coming or going. So there's an imbalance in the nervous system -- usually
we find it in the upper cervical spine.
That's our specialty, we are very gentle and specific. I think we do an awesome job, that's
why we're called Awesome Chiropractic and we will restore balance to the sympathetic
nervous system, the survival nerves and the parasympathetic nerves, the thrival nerves.
If we have balance between those 2 systems, we rest when we're supposed to rest and we
run when we're supposed to run.
