Welcome to the channel of Riga In Your Pocket. My name is Nienke and today we are in Sigulda.
It's approximately 50km away from Riga. It's a nice autumn day, so let's have a look.
Sigulda is located in Gauja National Park
The name comes from the River Gauja which flows through the entire park.
As you can see there are a lot of stairs here. So, if you decide to come here, make sure you wear some good hiking shoes.
Every season is worth a visit in Sigulda.
Latvians call autumn 'zelta rudens' which means 'golden autumn'.
At the moment we are at the Open Air Theatre of Sigulda. And that's our aim: we are trying to reach Turaida Castle,
which is far away over there, so we still have a long way to go.
This is the new Castle of Sigulda. It was built in the 19th century.
A restaurant is located here as well as the local City Council.
This is Gutman's Cave. It is the largest cave in the Baltic States.
With a little effort you can even find inscriptions from the 17th century here.
Legend says that if you drink this water you wuill live longer and better…
I actually want to try it, but I saw some enormous frogs crawling around here, so I better get out of here…
Turaida Castle was built in 1214. It served as a fortification.
It was badly damaged in a fire, but now it is ready for your visit.
