Hey guys, and welcome to Nothing To See Here.
I’m Red and we’ve got a sweet show lined up for you today,
including an interview with one of New Zealand’s
hottest bands right now,
Midnight Youth.
As you can see I’m decked out in all my
World Cup memorabilia
and we’re here at the Kingsland Train Station
waiting to catch a train
to Auckland’s opening night celebrations
at the Waterfront.
But first, let’s catch up with a few guys I talked to
earlier in the week.
How did all this come about?
I mean, did you it'd be great to get
five deaf guys to work for you?
How did it all come together?
I've only been here 18 months-2years,
and I actually inherited four
I've actually hired another two since then
So I actually have six working for me
So are there any humorous things that have happened on the job?
Yeah, there's something about hearing people
they're always teasing the deaf people.
Anytime, any day, they're vacuuming the cars
inside the car, they have to vacuum it
the hearing people run up and
switch off the vacuum cleaner
and then take off!
And the deaf person keeps vacuuming!
Because they don't know that it's gone off!
They're very funny,
They bring their own culture with them
they're actually quite hilarious
they come around with some pretty funny jokes.
And what would you say
is one of the funniest things you've found inside a car?
We've found women's bras before,
and thrown those out and told each other
and had a laugh about it.
We've found used condoms, ripped condoms
one that was really awful.
We've found DVDs and ***
Who would you say is the most famous person's car
you've cleaned? Who's the most famous person's?
D-A-N, Daniel Carter
Yeah, I met him and he's really famous.
They've got plenty of money,
they can afford to get their cars cleaned here
Yeah, they're very well-off.
With having the diverse workforce that we do have
it brings a lot of different cultures,
which everybody embraces here
and we all get along fine.
I mean, it's just a great place to work.
Hi, I'm Debbie,
and I do sign.
Today, I've got a real treat for you.
Robbie Deans sucks,
Go the All Blacks!
I'm here in downtown Auckland
We finally arrived, the atmosphere's electric
there are people everywhere, it's a little bit ridiculous.
There are supposed to be 50,000 people
turning up here tonight
to New Zealand's biggest fireworks and lighting display
and some of the country's biggest bands
including Midnight Youth.
I caught up with them earlier in the week
Here's what they had to say.
Hey well thanks for joining us today guys,
So for those of us that don't know who Midnight Youth are,
how would you describe yourselves?
I would say we're just a rock band
from New Zealand
Yep, pretty much that's it.
Nothing else.
And obviously you've got a new album coming out soon
that's exciting, tell us a bit more about that.
Oh man, it's been a long time coming
and we are so stoked about it
We just recorded it at York St Studios in Parnell
Actually right now as we speak, we have an hour to decide
what the album's actually going to be called
so yeah.
And of course you guys are playing at the Rugby World Cup
It's a big night, Friday the 9th
Are you guys excited? How are you feeling?
Yeah man, it's going to be crazy aye.
I mean, I don't know how they're going to fit,
Yeah it's a once in a lifetime, I don't know how they're going to fit
the amount of people in that little space 'cause
I mean, I don't know anybody who's not going aye.
It's going to be crazy.
And are who are you rooting for? Who's your team?
Well I'm going for South Africa.
You must be a marked man amongst your bandmates.
Oh I'm definitely a marked man.
And I guess we've got a little challenge for you guys today
if you're up for it
In Wheels of Fire,
contestants must battle their way
in a wheelchair, through a series of obstacles
a wheelie at the halfway line,
and a sprint to the finish
to earn their spot on the Wheels of Fire leaderboard.
First up in the Wheels of Fire challenge,
we've got Matt from Midnight Youth
You ready mate?
Alright, let's go, on your mark,
get set, go!
And he's off! 'Round Andre the Giant,
Straight past the Elephant Warrior, round the rugby ball,
Up to Kiwi corner,
does the wheelie,
And he's off! He's on the home straight!
Hooning down, and time!
21.9 seconds, that is a new Wheels of Fire record.
Good on ya Matt, congratulations.
Thank you very much
First on the leaderboard, good on ya.
Cheers, thank you very much.
That felt good, I just hope I don't get beaten aye,
I'm real competitive at these kind of things aye.
Hi, my name's P.J.
and what we're going to do today
is try and get this badge here,
on an All Black.
Hi Sir, I was wondering if you've seen any All Blacks around?
Seen any?
Yeah.
No...
Have you guys seen any All Blacks around?
Like, Richie McCaw, Dan Carter...
No not yet, I don't even know what they look like.
I was wondering if you've um,
have you seen any All Blacks around?
No? Okay, sweet.
Seriously, how hard is it to find an All Black?
Obviously rather difficult.
I've looked behind pillars, I've looked in trees,
I just don't know what to do!
Hey guys, how's it goin...?
I was wondering, is there any chance
I could just put this on you?
This would be like the highlight of my life.
I can get in trouble for things like this.
Do you?
Yep, he'll tell me off.
Yes!
Did you just see that?
Did that just happen? I think it did.
Yes, it definitely did.
I got the badge on an All Black.
I think it was Conrad Smith...
I'll find out, but anyway,
We did it, success!
The badge is on an All Black.
We're here at the World Cup celebrations
we're here to meet a few crazy lads, boys!
Yeah! Wooo!
I guess it takes all sorts,
we've found some pretty curious characters down here
as part of the World Cup celebrations.
Boys, tell us what this is all about.
Australia's coming over here, we didn't wana make them feel bad.
So we dressed up as convicts.
Guys, where are you from and who are you supporting?
We're with the City of Auckland pipe band,
We're playing in the opening ceremony tonight.
Kiss me til the sun goes down!
It's quite funny how
in other countries, there'd be things happening,
and balloons, and ferris wheels,
and God knows what else,
but in New Zealand,
we're just happy to be entertained by the sheer
number of people everywhere!
You know, it's ridiculous!
People from all around the globe,
descending on our little city for this one night.
It's quite exciting to be here.
Well the sun is setting on opening night celebrations
but the party is by no means over.
The opening ceremony's going on behind me,
and I'm about to sit back and watch the fireworks kick in.
I hope you enjoyed the first episode
of Nothing to See Here.
See ya next time!
