سنن المولود - Newborn -
Among the greatest things that the prophet [pbuh] was extremely concerned with is
the upbringing and nurturing of the next generation.
His care was very early on and far above what people might imagine.
The prophet [pbuh] was concerned with this
even prior to the marriage during the selection process.
He was also concerned with the pregnancy phase
and the birth of the newborn where he was concerned with surrounding the newborn,
from the moment he is born,
with practices that serve to facilitate the way for
this newborn to becoming a righteous servant of Allah [swt]
that is protected from the devil and his evil
and the illnesses and diseases, both internal and external.
The prophet [pbuh] mentioned to us
that the devil pokes the side of every newborn
after they leave the womb of their mother,
except Marym and her son Jesus.
Why? He said, because her mother sought protection for her;
she said, “My Lord, I commend her and her offspring
to Your protection from the rejected devil.”
See how the remembrance of Allah
during pregnancy protects the person from the devil and his evil.
[The first prophetic practice: The Adhaan]
The beloved prophet [pbuh] took care of the newborn
immediately after leaving his mother’s womb
by calling the adhaan in his ear so that the first thing that he encounters is
the remembrance of Allah, which will protect him from the rejected devil.
When the beloved prophet was informed of the birth of his grandson Hasan,
he rushed to him and called the adhaan in his right ear
and the Iqaamah in his leaft ear.
And he informed us [pbuh] that if the newborn hears the adhaan
he will not harmed by ummu-sibyaan
which is a type of devil specialized in harming children.
[Second prophetic practice: Tahneek]
The second prophetic practice is that of tahneek.
It has been reported on authority of Aisha and others
that newborn used to be brought to the prophet [pbuh];
the father would immediately take the child to the prophet [pbuh]
even before he is nursed by his mother
that he would bless him and put something sweet in his mouth.
in order The prophet [pbuh] would take from his saliva
and allow the baby to suck on it
by moving the tip of his finger around the child’s palate.
[Third prophetic practice: Naming the baby]
The third prophetic practice is to name the child on the seventh day.
Naming the newborn is an important prophetic practice
because the prophet [pbuh] said,
“Give your children the names of prophets,
and the best names are Abdullah and Abdur-Rahman,
and the most sincere names are Haarith and Hammam,
and the ugliest names are Harb and Murrah.”
[Fourth prophetic practice: Cutting the baby’s hair]
The fourth prophetic practice is cutting the baby’s hair on the seventh day,
and there are many benefits in doing so that scholars have mentioned,
and this was something that the prophet [pbuh] did with his grandsons Hasan and Husain
and it was also the practice of the companions –may Allah be pleased with them.
[Fifth prophetic practice: Donating the weight of the baby’s hair]
The fifth prophetic practice is to weigh the hair of the baby
and to give to charity its weight in silver,
and this is what is reported in the prophetic traditions
but the scholars have said that if one is able
he should give it in gold since it’s better
and more valuable
and more benefiting to the poor.
[Sixth prophetic practice: The aqeeqah]
The sixth prophetic practice is to do the aqeeqah,
which entails slaughtering two sheep for a boy and one sheep for a girl.
It is recommendable for the person to prepare the meat
and to invite people for a meal.
Meaning it is recommendable for him to be joyous
and to invite his friends and neighbors
and it’s also recommendable for every Muslim to attend an invite for an aqeeqah
because the prophet [pbuh] ordered us to attend an aqeeqah invite
and some of the scholars even made it compulsory to respond to an aqeeqah invitation.
[Seventh prophetic practice: Circumcision]
The seventh prophetic practice
that is required of the parents is circumcision
which is compulsory for boys
and recommendable for girls.
[Desirability of giving good news and congratulations]
It is recommendable for us to say to the parent of the newborn:
May Allah bless you with His gift to you,
and may the receiver give thanks
and reach the maturity of years and be granted piety.
This is a prophetic tradition reported to us through Imam Hasan
and it is a practice of the prophet [pbuh].
If we observe these seven practices that we mentioned
and we act upon them with our sons and daughters
they will be children living according to the practice of the prophet [pbuh].
What’s more beautiful than having fulfilled
the noble practice of the prophet of Allah [pbuh]
with my son or my daughter since the moment they enter this world!
I think this will definitely facilitate
for my children the adherence to the prophet practices when they get older.
So I would be someone that has built people that will become followers guided by the prophet [pbuh]
because their very essence,
since the early days of their pure and fresh composition,
became linked with the practices, etiquettes,
and guidance of our beloved prophet [pbuh].
