"When I'm studying my Bachelor of Business Management, some of the things that I really
love about it is all of my lecturers are completely lovely people. I can go and chat to them if
I have any problems with any of the subjects that I'm studying. They also give you really
good advice about what are good ways to get into the fields that you're interested in,
so UQ's really great in that it helps you to prepare for when you start entering the
workforce in your chosen field. For example this semester, I was lucky enough to have
a number of guest lecturers who came in and talked to us about how they practiced in their
fields. For example, we had someone come in to talk to us about Workplace Health and Safety,
and they were actually a Workplace Health and Safety manager in their organisation.
We also had representatives coming from some of the trade unions, we had a representative
come in from the Australian Industry Group, and they talked to us about the interaction
between unions and employer associations in the workforce. That really was great in that
it gave you an insight into what things were like when you were applying all of this knowledge
that you learn in university onto your career and when you're working in the workforce.
Before I decided to come to the University of Queensland, I spoke to a lot of family
and friends, and got their opinions on what they thought of different universities. I
had some family members who were quite up in the upper management of some companies
in Brisbane, so I had a chat to them and talked to them about what different universities
they thought had better reputations for when they were hiring their staff at a graduate
level. I also did lots of research on the internet to try and decide what areas of study
I was interested in. I also spoke a lot to my guidance counsellor when I was in year
12. They had really great information about all of the different courses that we could
study, and what areas different universities tended to specialise in. I'm very lucky in
that I have a very good time table while i'm at uni, I'm only generally here for about
12 - 14 hours a week. And I actually get to choose when I have a lot of my tutorials,
and when I have my lectures, so I can generally structure it so that I'm only here three days
a week, maybe a couple of mornings and an afternoon a week. That's really great, because
you can go home and study. I work part time as well. It's really good because you can
balance your life between all of your social activities, your academic activities and also
your work opportunities on the side. I've actually just moved off-campus, I'm living
in Toowong, which is quite close to the university. I'm able to catch the bus to uni, I can catch
the CityCat. There's lots of different ways that you can get to uni: I can drive, catch
public transport, so it's really very well accessible to people living in all parts of
Brisbane. I think my favourite aspect about UQ is probably the campus. I really love that
you can come along to uni, between your classes you can go and sit down at the Great Court,
or you can go down to the UQ Lakes and have a bit of a picnic with your friends. There's
also really great facilities that you're able to access: we've got UQ Sport so you can go
do lots of different sporting activities. We've got great athletics fields and sporting
ovals that you can do team sport on. We have fantastic libraries. They're probably some
of my most favourite aspects of UQ."
