Hello everyone, my name is Nilsor and welcome to my vault
Today on Fallout New Vegas 101
we’re going to see how the reputation system works
Reputation is the measurement of how a faction or town
is going to treat you
It is composed of 2 factors
Fame and Infamy
They are counted
not on an opposing scale but rather
in a combination of the two
You can gain points through many ways like
completing quests
talking with certain individuals
or killing people
The points gained in either of them
will remain until the end of the game
except in some really rare cases
The value of fame or infamy needed to change your reputation
varies upon who you’re dealing with
For example
to be idolized at Goodsprings
you will need to have at least 15 points in fame
and only between 0 and 2 in infamy
To be idiolized with NCR
you will need a minimum of 80 fame points
and between 0 and 11 infamy points
Having a good reputation can make you benefit
of certain advantages and is sometimes required in order to complete quest
On the contrary
having high Infamy will most likely make you being shot on sight
Town’s reputation differes slightly from faction’s reputation
in a way that having a negative reputation with townfolks
doesn’t alienate them against you
They won’t be permanently hostile and most of the time
spending a few days outside of town
will remove any hostility towards you
Using a disguise by putting on a faction armor
is a good way to bypass your current reputation with that faction
When you put a faction armor on
It masks your current fame and infamy with that faction
It sets you to neutral towards it
And it also makes you share its relation with others factions
For example
if you are vilified with NCR
putting an NCR armor on will make you neutral
But in the same time
your reputation with Caesar’s Legion will be set to hostile
since those two factions are at war
While having a faction armor on
the fame and infamy points that you gain
will still be added to your normal reputation
once you remove your disguise
Wearing a faction armor can therefore allow you to do quests
for a faction that you were normaly hostile to
But beware
some people can see through your disguise like
lieutenants
security guards
or trained dogs
Also if you are trying to avoid infamy while killing faction members
you can do so by staying hidden while shooting them
We previously said that
there was no way to reduce fame or infamy once gained
but there is actualy 3 exceptions
Two are coming at one point in the game
when NCR and Caesar's Legion will both offer you a one time opportunity
that will reset your Infamy towards them
The third one is to give money to James Garret at the Atomic Wrangler
He can propagate rumors in order to
increase your fame or lower your infamy within Freeside
Reputation plays an important role in New Vegas
it will heavely impact your playthrough
and modify the outcomes of the game
Being in good term with everyone is impossible
simply because some factions aren’t compatible like
the democratic NCR who can’t stand
the dictatorial ways of Caesar’s Legion
or the Brotherhood of Steel who is looking negatively
at the Followers of the Apocalypse because they dare to share technology
instead of keeping it lock in order to avoid misuse
You will therefore need multiple playthroughs
to experience all the possibilties that the game has to offer
Now we’ll continue our journey through the Mojave Wasteland
and head to Primm
